A few more questions:

- did you use "Software Update" or the combo installer to install the 
10.4.9 update? 
- do you use Fast User Switching? 
- what does

md5 /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/BezelServices.framework/ 
Versions/A/BezelServices

output on your system?
