This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.

Yes, Remote Buddy needs to run in order for your remote control to work.

If all you want is that Remote Buddy acts like a "native" Apple
Remote, please have a look at the Feature at the end of Remote Buddy's
website's main page. It contains a How-To on how to set this up.
