Sorry to resurrect an old-ish thread, but I'd just like to add another comment in support of this feature :)

I'm using a Microsoft eHome receiver with my Mac Mini G4. It's working superbly with the Apple remote -- I used to have the Keyspan Front Row RF remote which struggled with held key-presses, but the Apple remote works great!
