This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
It's a dongle, and is supported in Linux out of the box with the LIRC drivers. Here is the product that I purchased for more information:

I hope that helps. I've since made my own dongle out of an IR board from a newer Apple machine, but it will be helpful to have support for this receiver for future projects.
