Keyspan Express Remote with MacBook internal reciever
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
I was assuming that I would be able to use my Keyspan Remote on my new MacBook's internal receiver, but I only seem to be able to get Remote Buddy to recognize it is with the Keyspan Receiver.

Am I just missing out on how to set it up right?

The Mac's built-in IR receiver is limited - in hardware - to the Apple
Remote. You can't use any remotes other than the Apple Remote with it.

Oh, it makes sense in many ways.

For example, the built-in IR receiver can be set to only wake the Mac
from sleep on button presses of a particular remote. That feature can
actually be very handy, but it's only possible if the receiver also
interprets the signals it receives.

On the other hand, a receiver that just passes on raw data would wake
on every IR signal, including those of your stereo, TV, etc. - which
can become annoying pretty fast.

So, I guess that the built-in IR receiver can only be used with Apple
Remotes is the price that has to be paid for that kind of convenience
features ;-)

Best regards,
Felix

I guess for home use it all makes sense.
With a laptop it's a bit of a different matter. It certainly would be nice to be able to have a more functional remote you could easily travel with.
