Do I have to launch Remote Buddy in order to make a remote work?

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Hi.

I just bought Remote Buddy and am quite satisfied.
However, perhaps I misunderstood the concept of the kernel extension, but so far, my Apple Remote (using a Microsoft Media Center IrDA-receiver) only works when Remote Buddy is running. While I've seen the preferences option to launch Remote Buddy on logon, I'd prefer if the remote would also work without the app running.
Is there a way? Did I miss something? So far I'm mainly interested in using Frontrow, so I don't really need all the functions of Remote Buddy.

I have a PowerMac G5, single 1.8 GHz, ATI Radeon 9600XT 128 MB VRAM, 2 GB RAM, 2 HDDs, Bluetooth, Airport.
