Help creating a Dashboard solution

I'm looking for a good way to implement Dashboard into my RB menu. I've been messing around with several possibilities, but none seem to work to my satisfaction. Suggestions would be wonderful.

I know RB has built-in support for Expose features, which include Dashboard, but I'm using RB as an interface for a DVR setup, so I'm trying to simplify its use as much as possible. Since the other Expose features will never need to be used, what I'd like is for there to simply be a Dashboard item in the main menu.

Ideally, here's how it would work: There's an item in the main menu, similar to how you can place the Eject or Restart items in the main menu. When you select it, it closes the RB menu and brings up the Dashboard. From the Dashboard, pressing practically any button will simply close the Dashboard and return you to whatever you were doing before opening it.

I've already tried setting up custom actions and behaviors, but I can't seem to get them working properly. Anyway, any help or direction would be greatly appreciated!

I wanted this for my Mac mini media system, too, so I added the Dashboard action (selected my own menu profile, the in the Item Library, under Actions -> Exposé) to the main menu in Menu Layout. It's not quite as nice as you might want (I'm pretty sure it brings up Dashboard but leaves the Remote Buddy menu up; you can choose Dashboard from the Remote Buddy menu again to deactivate it), but it's fairly quick remote control access to Dashboard.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had actually already hit upon this method, and was hoping for something a little more seamless, but it's certainly the best I've found. I'll be going with this if I don't find any better methods.

Unfortunately, as you point out, using the Dashboard action in the main menu does leave the RB menu open when you use it. It's actually possible, I think, to build your own action that essentially does the same thing - toggle Dashboard - as well as close the RB menu. (I'm guessing that all the built-in Dashboard command does is really just to simulate pressing F12.) The only problem remaining is that this method won't change the active behavior, so you have to go back into the RB menu to close the Dashboard.

If it were just about me, I wouldn't even worry about it or look any further. But I pretty much want the thing to be so easy my mother could use it, so it would be great to have something even more intuitive.

Try this:

Step 1: In Preferences > Menu

Place the item located at

Actions > Behaviours > Activate Exposé Behaviour

from the "Item Library" to the place of your choice in your custom
menu profile.

Step 2: In Preferences > Mapping

- Map the play button to the Dashboard action

- Map all other buttons to the action "Behaviours > Deactivate current
Behaviour" (as found in the popup)

After that, you can enter Dashboard by selecting the item in the menu,
then pressing Play for as long as you want to see Dashboard. Any other
button presses will return you to the Behaviour Remote Buddy
automatically chooses for you.

Best regards,
Felix
