buddy + leopard + frontrow = menus dissapear after 1 run of frontrow
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
I've brought a mac mini for a HTPC and have set it up with bluetooth mouse and keyboard. Front row is working well and is the main function of the machine, i've noticed though how it can be a bit frustrating that whilst it auto logs in so after booting is ready to be used, to shut down requires setting up the keyboard and mouse to be able to do so.

I though Remote Buddy may be able to help, obviously it can do a lot more. Just got the default setup going and am having some problems.

Firstly the preferences pages got confused and didn't show everything available, its a 720p display so things are slightly tight but not offensively so. After struggling to understand how to setup the default options i managed to add what i wanted.. shut down and sleep options.

Finally all working ok so long as no other apps were on top the default behaviour was active, the options were there.. Holding to activate frontrow worked well.. into frontrow all was fine. Come out of frontrow and all seems well. Finally press again to bring up the remote buddy menu and after a longer delay than normal an empty menu with < No Entries pops up instead of the default behaviour menu.

Bringing another app like safari to the front and then clicking menu brings up safari's menu ok, meaning if you then go back to finder for example and click menu it all works fine again.

This is not something i can do if i'm trying to get it vaguely functioning without any mouse/keyboard active.

Repeating these steps gets the same problem to happen everytime.

I've got the latest version, i've installed the latest kernel behaviours or whatever they were as well.

I also rebooted my machine and was surprised to see having rebooted a different menu, with lots of programs to be selected, the "simplified profile" i guess.. a little too cluttered for my basic frontrow, sleep, power off options but not too bad. This was with remote buddy in focus i guess? Since though i've not been able to get back to this menu at all, i can only alternate between my correct default behaviour menu and the broken one that lists NO Entries.

As i said this program does a lot more than i need right now, but i'm happy using only 1% of it.. please could you help me fix this, as is its not very helpful the option to turn the computer off will dissapear as soon as anyone has run frontrow!!

Cheers

Hello,

this sounds as if you created an empty menu profile, didn't add any
entries to it and made it the active profile (the green checkmark in
front of it). It'll thus show up as "no entries" as there are no
entries in it.

Possible solutions:
- select or create a profile with entries and make it the active
profile (pressing the checkmark icon in the toolbar on the bottom-left
of the menu preferences pane)
- add items to your empty, active profile

The Default Behaviour will only be selected if absolutely no supported
application is in the front and none of the multimedia player apps
like iTunes is in the background.

You'll also find a lot of easy step-by-step guides for things you'll
want to do if you don't want to stick to the default settings in the
online help and more specialized stuff in the Remote Buddy FAQ.

Best regards,
Felix

Thanks for your help.

I only have two profiles, the defaults. The simplified profile is ticked.

There is no empty one. As i said I find it hard to see the contents of that profile, i only saw it once after restarting os X. Just restarted again to install OSX updates and came to it late after the trial had auto selected. The first menu showed my default behaviour menu, NOT the simplified profile option.

Is there a way i can nuke all my settings and try again... there is a problem with the menu preferences page, occasionally the preferences open up too small and i have to change to mapping and back to menu to be able to see the menu options properly. I don't think this is related to my menu issue after running frontrow but thought i'd give you more detail of the reproduce for that particular issue as well.

Oh and sorry, to be clear the problem is still happening even though i have the simplified profile selected, as i said though i rarely actually see that profile menu. The easiest reproduce is to have finder in focus, frontrow, on return the menu is broken. Before running frontrow the remote buddy menu was running correctly with finder at the front.

Just in case: you shouldn't use any Remote Buddy version older than
1.8 on Leopard. Versions older than that will show interface issues
under Leopard as some important details of AppKit have changed in 10.5.

Entering

rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.iospirit.*emote*uddy*.plist

in Terminal.app, while Remote Buddy is not running will reset all of
your settings to the default. You can also selectivly just delete /
rename / move the files for menuprofiles or particular remotes.

I am running Remote Buddy 1.8.1, trial. Installed today.

I just ran your command to remove all the files, indeed the default behaviour menu is lightweight again.

After single pressing to bring up the remote buddy menu, single pressing to hide it, I then frontrow-ed (by holding menu), and single clicked menu to return. By accident i then started holding menu again, when really i wanted a click to see what the remote buddy menu would look like, i let go and frontrow didn't appear for whatever reason. Another single click and the remote buddy menu looked fine.

Another loop of then single clicking to hide the remote buddy menu, holding for frontrow, single clicking to exit frontrow, and then single clicking to bring up the remote buddy menu got me to the broken no entries menu again.

This was before changing any menus or settings since deleting the plist files you suggested.

Have you tried this, with say desktop, or a finder window in focus.. I don't know what else to try, its a fairly clean brand new mac mini, 2ghz C2D. Running 10.5.1.

Whatever extra diagnostics you require would be fine, if there are options i can run that generate logs i could post to this thread or email you i'd be happy to do so to help try and debug the problem.

Thanks for your quick replies.

Felix,

I experience the same problems with empty menus as jimbobuk. I'll try to describe my setup and how I can reproduce it.

My mini with 10.5.1 (latest version of this update) and RB 1.8.1 (upgraded from 1.7 to 1.8 to 1.8.1) has Front Row as the default application when starting up. It also automatically connects to 2 network (samba) shares so 2 Finder Windows are open before Front Row gets active. No Bluetooth mouse is connected, only a Bluetooth keyboard.

After Front Row has (automatically) started, I exit it via the menu-button on the remote. I check the RB-menu by pressing the menu-button once and everything is fine. Then I exit the RB-menu.

Then I start Front Row by keeping the menu-button pressed. Front Row appears and I exit again via the menu-button. I check the RB-menu by pressing the menu-button once and I get an empty menu!

Hope this helps you reproduce this annoying problem. As I have no control on my Mac when this problem occurs, I need to reboot is via my other Mac using screen sharing. Or do you have another workaround?

Thanks,

John.

I may have also seen this. I see something like "< no entries" But, generally, if I cycle the Remote Buddy menu a couple of times (with the Menu button), I get back to all the menu items.

I've added it to my "to look into" list and try to find and fix
whatever the cause for the next version.

I'll get in touch with you if I need more information.

Just FYI: I could identify and fix the problem.

Temporary workaround until next release:
Press the menu button to close it, then press it again to open it again.

Felix,

good to hear that you're able to reproduce it and also have a fix in place.

When do you expect the new version to be ready? I'm always happy to do some beta-testing.

The workaround doesn't always work and often the menu stays empty.

John.
