Problem with Keyspan Front Row RF Control and latest release of Remote Buddy
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
I haven't actually used Remote Buddy for quite some time, even though it starts up with Mac OS X. From time to time, it announced new updates, which I've allowed every time. Today when I tried to use it, I noticed, much to my surprise, that pressing the Menu button, no matter what application has the focus, will bring up Front Row, not the Remote Buddy menu. This is running on Leopard. Since I hadn't changed my preferences, and they look OK, what can be wrong? Is there anything I can check? If everything fails, is there any certainty that fully uninstalling and then reinstalling the latest version will solve the situation? Thanks.

Previous versions used the OS X HID APIs to provide driver support for
the KS FR RF.

Since Leopard, this strategy does no longer work as expected, so the
driver moved from user space to kernel space.

So what you need to do to regain support for your remote in Remote
Buddy is simply to install its drivers using its Setup Wizard.

Thank you, Felix. That did it. I had thought the updater had also installed the new driver, but, apparently, it didn't.

Congratulations on a very fine product indeed.

After successfully installing the driver yesterday (using the Setup Wizard), Remote Buddy was unresponsive again today!

I've just reinstalled the driver and it works fine, but I'm afraid the next I restart my computer Remote Buddy will be unresponsive again. What gives? How can I make the driver installation "stick", so to speak?

Please make sure you choose the "Install driver" rather than the
"Testdrive driver" option in the Setup Wizard.

If you have done that, please make sure that:

1) you don't have an older version of Remote Buddy on your harddrive
that's started on startup or linked to from your dock.

2) your installed version is a clean install (=> you may want to
redownload it manually, delete the old copy, then move the new copy to
its place)

If the issue persists, with Remote Buddy running (important), please
provide me with some diagnostic information:

1) An ioreg-dump. Create it by entering

ioreg -w0 -l >~/Desktop/ioregDump.txt

into Terminal.app (found in /Applications/Utilities). That creates an
ioreg-dump file named ioregDump.txt on your desktop.

2) A System Profile. Create it by starting System Profiler.app (found
in /Applications/Utilities) and choose "Save as.." from the "File" menu.

Please send these two files to info@iospirit.com.

Dear Felix,

There must be something odd in my computer, but I don't know what it is. I've already sent you the two files you requested.

This afternoon I checked if logging out would cause Remote Buddy to stop working. It doesn't. It's just rebooting. Once I reboot, I need to reinstall the driver. Once it's been reinstalled, Remote Buddy will work flawlessly until the next reboot.

I've never "tried" the new driver, but I've already installed it at least a dozen times. I've even reinstalled Remote Buddy from a freshly downloaded DMG. Perhaps there are hidden remains of previous versions somewhere, but I've been able to detect them.

Thank you for your help.

Thanks for the files. Please update to the just released version 1.8.9
and let me know, if it does not solve the problem.

Dear Felix,

Wonderful! It works. This time, I didn't even have to reinstall the driver.

Thank you very much.
