New to Remote Buddy - A few questions
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Hello,

I just bought Remote Buddy and it works like a charm. My main reason for buying it was to use it with my iPhone as a universal remote, both in front of my mac and from around the house. It does a brilliant job with iTunes, and I was wondering if it is possible to implement some of the same features with other apps. Not everything but things like being able to see all the Airfoil zones and their sources. Then to change these. Is this something I can maybe implement myself? Or can one even add features to the AJAX interface?

Second question is a similar one. Is it possible to create new menus, or add actions to menus without having to map them to a button? On my iPhone, it would be just perfect to have a menu of a bunch of applescripts that executed when pressed selected. Not giving me feedback of any kind, just to execute them.

I hope you understand what I'm asking for. A great product none the less!

Regards,

Øyvind

Hello Øyvind,

right now, AJAX Remote is a closed architecture functionality-wise.

The latter is something you can do. On the AJAX Remote main screen,
you can choose "Menu" to access Remote Buddy's menu directly. The menu
presented there always is the default menu as configured in
Preferences > Menu. You can design that menu freely. To add
AppleScript items, first create a global action, then find it in
Actions > Miscellaneous and add it to the menu. The How-Tos in the
Help will walk you through the respective steps.

Thanks for the reply. That really does what I was looking for. Now for a follow up question: Is it possible to create a custum menu container? So that I can put all my applescripts in a custom container and not having to add it to the Real Player menu or any of the other applications. These scripts might not even have anything to do with these applications.

Cheers.

Ps: This is a bit off topic, but do anyone know of a good way to create web apps that runs applescripts on the mac? Web server etc.? If anyone got links etc... :) Making the web app is simple enough, but its the talking-to-the-mac thing that im having a hard time with. Thanks in advance.

When editing a menu profile, you can create empty containers by
hitting the + button below the menu layout.

Then, you can add your custom actions into it. Just make sure you
checked the "global" checkbox and they'll turn up in the Menu Item
Library.

Regarding your P.S.: Remote Buddy can do that. Simply add your
AppleScripts to Remote Buddy's menu, then access the menu through AJAX
Remote's "menu" feature.

Ah. Brilliant! I was trying to click the + sign in the left hand side menu, but was only getting the New profile option. But got it now and boy is this sweet. :)

Regarding the ps, when I look at it again I can see how it reads pretty much the same as my original question. What I really meant was to create my own little interface / web app (with my own buttons and all) and just have them run specific applescripts on my mac when clicked. I know this isnt related to Remote Buddy but I thought Id give it a try anyway.

Aaanyway. This new trick just opened up a whole lot of new doors.

Actually. One new question. In relation to profiles, is it possible to change profile from within Remote Buddy or through applescript. It would be quite nice to create different profiles for different scenarios and change them remotely when needed.

Cheers!
