VIDEO_TS Movie Problem / Movie Library
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Hi there,

i followed the FAQ and structured my movie folders accordingly:

/movie/movie name - author/VIDEO_TS/some file name.[avi|mov]

I added the folder /movie/ to Remote Buddy and the movies get listed in the Movie Library.

Now, when I click a movie with my remote, VLC gives me the following error:

vcd: search for kIOCDMediaClass came up empty
vcd: failed to get the TOC
vcd: no movie tracks found
access_file: file /dev/rdisk3 is empty, aborting
cdda: search for kIOCDMediaClass came up empty
cdda: failed to get the TOC
cdda: no audio tracks found
vcd: search for kIOCDMediaClass came up empty
vcd: failed to get the TOC
vcd: no movie tracks found
access_file: file /dev/rdisk3 is empty, aborting
cdda: search for kIOCDMediaClass came up empty
cdda: failed to get the TOC
cdda: no audio tracks found
main: no suitable access module for `/dev/rdisk3'
main: thread 2685792160: mutex_lock failed at misc/variables.c:805 (22:Invalid argument)
main: thread 2685792160: mutex_unlock failed at misc/variables.c:811 (22:Invalid argument)

The VLC playlist shows: "VIDEO_TS" - a folder name, not the movie name. The movie plays well in VLC via drag&drop.

What am I doing wrong? Could someone help me?
Best wishes!

Thanks for asking.

Remote Buddy will always submit the VIDEO_TS folder to VLC. Usually,
if it contains movies, VLC will scan the directory for movie files it
can play back and start playback.

There is a known bug in VLC, though, where it *might* not work
correctly with VIDEO_TS directories, if they are located in a disk
image (dmg / sparseimage / FileVault). The same is probably true if
you burned the movies on a CD/DVD and try to play it back from there.

DVD Player - on my MacBook Pro - will quit with an error message when
I try to play back regular DVDs, if I'm inside an account that's
FileVault-encrypted. Creating a new account that doesn't use FileVault
did then let me play back my DVDs without problems.

Having said that: where did you store the movie files?

It seems you are pointing to the right direction. Yes, I am using FileVault and that is probably the cause.

A quick search did not reveal anything about this problem (searched for "vlc filevault"). Do you know any workaround or if the developpers fix this it?

Best wishes!

I did a quick search on the VideoLAN (makers of VLC) forum for
FileVault and a report of a problem identical to yours (just that in
that case, the users drags a folder of movies onto VLC) dates back to
August 2007:

http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=40188&p=125237&hilit=filevault#p125237

I'm afraid I can't do anything about this problem, since this really
seems to be a general VLC problem with folders stored in FileVault (or
more general: all kinds of OS X disk images).

Since FileVault basically means that your account runs in an encrypted
sparseimage, you should be able to at least work around that problem by

1) either moving the movies out of your user folder (mounted at /Users/
yourusername), f.ex. to /Movies
2) or disabling FileVault for your account.

Please be sure to report the bug to the VLC team, so they are aware of
it and can fix it with future releases.

Hey Felix,

thank you! It is obvious to me that you are right with your assumption. I tried to drag & drop a movie folder directly into my VLC playlist and the same error occured. As described in your link above, it is altough possible to drag and drop an mov or avi file directly into the playlist without any problem.

Now I will contact videolan and let them know.

Best wishes!
