Next/Previous slower than +/-
View

I am mapping Next, Previous, +, and - to the keyboard arrows. But it seems that Next and Previous buttons incur almost 1/2 second delay when the buttons ared held down while + and - give quick response. Both give quick response when tapped quickly, and it seems the Next/Previous respond to button-up quickly, but force a delay if the keys are held down. Not so with + and -, which are always quick.

Anyone seen this and know a workaround? Is it a function of the Apple remote? Is there a defaults setting that changes it?

Thanks for asking.

Remote Buddy goes a very long way to make sure you get the fastest
response possible to a button press on your remote.

If you want an instant reaction to long button presses, you should
only map one function to a button, though.

The background here is purely mathematical / physical. If you have two
different actions mapped to a button, there needs to be a time limit
to differentiate between a short and a long press. At the time you
start pressing the button, RB can't know when you'll release it and
thus won't be able to tell whether you want to trigger the action
mapped to the long press of the button or the short press of the
button. If you release the button before that time limit, RB will know
its a short button press. If the time limit is stepped over and you
still press the button, it knows you want to perform a long press.

Therefore, if you want an instant reaction to a button press, map only
one action to that button. Remote Buddy then doesn't need to
differentiate between two types of button presses for that one button
and can initiate the execution of the mapped action as soon as you
press the button.

OK Felix, this is awesome and thanks for responding so quickly. Yes, once I configure Remote Buddy for the keystrokes I want, it works perfectly. Now I will be able to move the 2.1m Otto Struve telescope at McDonald Observatory with an Apple Remote. Might make a good "I'm a PC and I"m a Mac" advertisement, with PC and his pie charts, while Mac searches the heavens.

The hardest part will be figuring out how to pay in Euros from Texas. Last time I bought some software from Scotland (Runtime Revolution) it took special permission to make the order!

Wow! Now that's a truely creative and impressive use of Remote Buddy :-)

Don't worry about the currency. The creditcard company (or PayPal,
when using PayPal) will automatically perform the conversion for you.
Usually, you'll then see three lines on your creditcard statement: one
with the Euro price, one with the conversion rate used by your
creditcard company and one with the amount in US dollar.

To get an idea of what 19.99 Euro are in another currency, just use
the built-in converter on the lower end of the shopping cart's list in
the IOSPIRIT Store. After a long time, the US dollar has become
stronger again recently, making RB cheaper for US citizens (=> http://finance.yahoo.com/currency/convert?amt=19.99&from=EUR&to=USD&submit=Convert
)
