daily freeze ups
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Once a day (almost never more, but also never less) Remote Buddy freezes up. By freeze up, I mean it goes from working normally to completely non-responsive. When I move my mouse over the menu bar icon I get the spinning beach ball. I can let RB churn for a long time but it never comes back. I have to kill the process and restart it.

The freeze ups seem to occur most often when the computer has been sitting unused for a while--when I get home from work, for example. I'll use Remote Buddy to start a video (mplayer usually) and the video starts fine, but Remote Buddy then freezes up. I usually notice when I try to change the volume right after the video starts.

This occurs so regularly that I have written a shell script that I can use to remotely restart RB via SSH.

Let me know if there's what else you need to know to help out.

Thanks for asking.

I have recently seen some reports like yours that eventually all
traced back to

1) the use of badly written ApplicationEnhancer (APE) modules or
InputManagers that injected code into Remote Buddy and through the
misue of Core Audio in that injected code, deadlocked Remote Buddy's
main runloop.

If you have APE installed, please either put Remote Buddy on its list
of apps to exclude from injected code or - better - uninstall APE (=> http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1545
) and/or InputManagers you may be using. Then reboot to make sure no
remains are left over in memory.

2) the use of ringtones in iTunes. Since iTunes 7.6.x, iTunes carries
a bug that freezes apps that use its AppleScript API in absolutely
standard ways. Removing the ringtones from the library instantly fixes
the problem (=> more info available in the FAQ and the forum).

If you experience freezes even after excluding 1) and 2), please
create an "Analyze-log" using Activity Monitor.app's "Analyze"
function and send it - along with a System Profile - to the info
address as found in the site's Imprint.

Best regards,
