Send events to Plex when Plex does not have focus
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
I'm in the process of setting up Remote Buddy and Plex with my new Mac Pro.

I am using 2 displays: 1 cinema display as the primary display and a plasma as a secondary display.

My aim is to be able to use Plex as a background task to run for the home theatre, whilst being able to do tasks on my desktop.

Everything is working quite nicely except for 1 thing: When Plex doesn't have focus, for example if I am viewing a web page on the primary display, all of the events from the Sony BD remote are sent to the application with the focus.

I was looking at the custom actions and I think it looks possible to be able to send an event directly to an application (by class or some other way).

Any help with an example how to send an event/keystroke directly to Plex would be greatly appreciated!

:)

I have the same set up as you do. Dual screens, a PS3 remote, and I work on one screen, watch on the other.

You would have to make each action yourself and then

• uncheck "Activate application and bring it to front"
• check "send event directly to this application"

What I did is create a new behavior and input all the actions there. If you want I can share that with you, it'll probably save you quite some time ;)

Thanks for the tip! If you could send me what you have, it'll definitely help save me some time. I haven't had a look at it yet but I will definitely try and set it up this weekend.

Could you send it to:

greybruxelles-rego (at) yahoo (dot) com

Thanks!

I thought it'd help others so I uploaded the file online, here's the link:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/qmenmkynjmy/Plex.rbscriptedbehaviour.zip

Let me know how that goes :)

BTW, make sure you uncheck the default Plex behavior in order to use the custom one. Here are Felix's instructions:

"Please note that, when you add your own Behaviour for an app that's
already supported by a Behaviour that ships with Remote Buddy itself,
which of the Behaviours will be picked to control the app is undefined.

You'll definately want to make sure that:

- you uncheck the checkbox in front of Remote Buddy's *own* Behaviour
in Remote Buddy > Prefs > Behaviour (so it's no longer used by Remote
Buddy).

- you do have only one copy of your Behaviour lying around in ~/
Library/Application Support/Remote Buddy/Behaviours"

Thanks Miguel, it works great! I can now send events to Plex directly.

I also had to disable the default behaviour (Remote buddy was switching to it) and also remove alot of global mappings. Since the remote will only be used for Plex, it's no problem.

Thanks again for your help.

Cool, I'm glad to hear. Hey, what do you mean about having to remove the global mappings?

It might have been something that I put in the past, or it could be some kind of default in Remote Buddy.

Under the mappings preferences, for the remote, there was mappings for the arrow keys. I had to unmap those values as it was overriding the behaviour.

I have this same exact setup and I too installed the behavior as per the instructions. I unchecked the included Plex behavior as well as unchecked all other behaviors and global mappings. There is only 1 copy of your behavior (in fact it is the only behavior) in the ~/appplication/ ... behaviors folder.

It still doesn't work. It either does nothing at all when Plex is out of Focus or it will keep sending a particular key (ex. down or up arrows) constantly making the menus scroll repeatedly until I place Plex back in focus.

Any ideas what I may be doing wrong here?

Make sure that you "Activate" the behavior. This can be done by pressing the "Playstation" button on the PS3 remote and selecting the "Plex" behavior. If the custom behavior doesn't appear on the Menu, you'll have to configure it on Preferences -> Menu

Once activated, to keep it active go to Preferences -> General -> Advanced and check the following:

"Manually activated Behaviors stay active until they are explicitly deactivated"

Let me know if that works ;)

Miguel:

That was the trick! For some reason it wasn't the default behavior on
startup even though I had it checked as such... oh well. Fixed now
though.

Thanks!
