Apple Remote requires doube-press to do anything
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Hi there,

Until recently I've been running windows media center for my entertainment system and thought I'd give OSX a shot. I have an MCE IR receiver (UVO4003) and I purchased an Apple remote to use with EyeTV and Plex.

What I've found is that the Apple remote won't do anything unless I double press the buttons. Double press the menu to get the menu, double press up to turn up the volume, etc. Holding buttons doesn't seem to work.

Is there a setting somewhere that I have wrong? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks for asking.

When the battery of your Apple Remote is low, the Apple Remote will
send a "battery low" event instead of the actual button press
information. Therefore, you may have to press a button twice before
the actual code is being sent, and holding a button may not work. A
fresh battery for the AR should solve the problem.

Please note that even a new Apple Remote is not guaranteed to have a
full battery. I've received a number of reports in the past from users
who found they bought an Apple Remote with empty or almost empty
battery.

I replaced the battery. Things are much more responsive now, though it still seems to miss clicks occasionally or require a double click to get it to respond. This is still an improvement. Instead of every action requiring two clicks, now it's maybe one in twenty...

Thanks for the info.

Please ensure you have a direct line of sight between the receiver and
your remote and that the distance between receiver and remote isn't
too big.

Besides: did you use a completely new battery?

brand new remote, brand new battery, about 6 feet from the receiver (that works fine in windows MCE). The light on the receiver blinks when you click a button but nothing happens. If you double click a button, it works fine.

I think I'm going to have to go back to MCE as I can't ask my girl to deal with this flaky-ness.

The Apple Remote will send a "low battery" code instead of a button
code, when its battery is low, the first time after waking from sleep.
The Apple Remote will then send subsequent presses until the remote
goes to sleep again. If the battery is very low, it may be sending
"low battery" codes more frequently.

Although the remote is brand new, you said that the situation improved
after replacing the battery. I certainly believe you that both the
battery and the remote are new and 6 feet is well within the range of
the Apple Remote and the receiver, yet, still, the only thing that can
explain what you are seeing is the Apple Remote sending a low battery
signal following the pattern described above.

If so, then what recourse do I have? It sounds like my options are to use a different remote entirely (a wii mote or something, which I don't have) or... what?
