10.5.6 Update - Anyone having problems?
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
I was wondering if anyone else is having problems with their Sony BD remote after updating to 10.5.6?

I can't be sure that updating to 10.5.6 is the cause but it is the only major thing I did today.

Here is what is in the console. Does this relate to remote buddy?

Dec 16 20:03:05 Pro blued[46]: addDeviceToHIDEmulationMode - unrecognized HID device; NOT storing the link keys to the module.
Dec 16 20:03:05 Pro blued[46]: isCSR: 1 isBRCM: 0

It's bizarre. I've tried looking around to figure out what is wrong. In System Preferences>Bluetooth, the "BD Remote Control" is green and connected.

Then at some random interval, Remote Buddy starts registering what's going on and the menu will come up.

I've tried two other sets of batteries, just in case...

I also noticed that whilst remote buddy is open, kernel_task takes up around 10% of every core on a 8 core Mac Pro... that's alot of crunching

Thanks everybody for reporting the issue. I've been able to reproduce
it and am looking into it. What seems to be happening is that the OS X
10.5.6 version of the Apple Bluetooth stack keeps opening and closing
the communication channel in an endless loop, so that Remote Buddy
never can complete the process of connecting to the device.

Early research results hint at a possible workaround, but it'll be
quite complex and - unless I find a different solution - will require
a complete rewrite of the BD Remote driver, which - of course - will
take some time.

Therefore, I recommend everybody who has not yet updated to 10.5.6 to
postpone the update until a solution is available.

Thanks for the quick response Felix. Is this problem likely to be a bug in OS X (that Apple might be open to fixing)? Or is it a change of behaviour from OS X?

The exact mechanism of what is happening is still unclear to me, as I
haven't found a way to dig as deeply into the internals of IOKit as
I'd need to to get to the bottom of things.

Nonetheless, I already have the rewritten driver running and am
currently testing it in a number of different setups. Unless something
unexpected turns up during the tests, the new driver will be available
in a matter of days.

FYI -

I'm not sure if this is related, but since updating to 10.5.6 I have been having trouble with movies played via front row stuttering whenever I my wii remote is not powered on.

I first noticed this when the wii remote auto-powered off and video started getting really glitchy. I pressed the 1+2 buttons to pair the remote and as soon as I did so playback resumed with no glitches or stuttering.

I have confirmed this multiple times by powering off the wii remote during video playback. I also am able to play video without remote buddy running with no stuttering.

I also had this pb with 10.5.6 and the 1.11.4 release fixed this issue, thx a lot.

But in fact, I have a new hick up with the new driver : the "power saving disconnection" does not work. The BD is operating very well but Remote Buddy does not disconnect it after the specified time value (I tried multiples values without success).

Anyone having the same issue ?

From the release note for 1.11.4, revert back to 10.5.5 and it will work again:

NEW: New driver for the Sony® PS3 BD Remote. Apple® made changes to the Bluetooth subsystem in OS X 10.5.6 that rendered the previous driver incompatible. An unfortunate side-effect of the changes in OS X 10.5.6 is that Remote Buddy can no longer offer auto-disconnect functionality for connections to the Sony® PS3 BD Remote. To disconnect your BD Remote using the remote itself, press the PS button for several seconds. The new driver is only used for users running OS X 10.5.6 and later.
