This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
If your Mac has an AirPort card, you're all set. You can set up your 
Mac quite easily as "base station" using the "Sharing" System 
Preferences pane (the local WLAN here is set up this way - no 
dedicated base stations here) - or, if your Mac is already connected 
to an existing WLAN network, I don't think you'll have any trouble to 
connect the iPod Touch / iPhone to it, too.

In either case, if you have an AirPort card, you have all hardware you 
need on the Mac's end.
