so there's absolutely no way to use the wiimote to play games with
multiple key presses yet?

Not right now.

can i just disable the wiimote from controlling the desktop
temporarily then allow it as a game controller?

This option is currently not available.

and if this feature is being worked on, do you have an expected date
when the update will be available?
