This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
The OS X Bluetooth stack unfortunately has a long track record of not working consistently well with USB Bluetooth adapters. Some will work great while others will give mixed results or disconnect often. Unfortunately, Apple doesn't provide a list of adapters it officially supports.

The built-in Bluetooth Adapter that Apple ships should work fine, though.
