Hoping to buy Remote Buddy very soon but have a question:

Can you map all the buttons on the Wii remote (or any support remote)

Hello Chris,

thanks for asking.

Remote Buddy allows you full control on how you want to map the
buttons. The only exception is the button that serves as menu button.
Right now, you can only configure the hold status of that button (=>
which means, a short press will turn up the Remote Buddy menu, a long
press will execute whatever you want it to execute). But I do plan to
remove this last limitation in configurability as well with a future
release. It's easy technically, but I just did not find a user
interface solution for this that I truely like, yet :-)

Best regards,
Felix

So... would Remote Buddy allow me to buy a Wii controller, and use it instead of the mouse to move the pointer around by waving the Wii remote in the air ("virtual mousing")? And then, I presume, one of the buttons on the Wii controller would take the place of left-click and one for right-click?

This would be awesome for me since I like to lean back and surf. Please let me know!

Hello Steve,

thanks for asking.

Right now, Remote Buddy only supports the buttons of the Wii Remote,
but I'm working on adding support for the other features of that fine
piece of hardware.

Felix

So does that mean that we might see Classic Controller(the accessory that plugs into the Wiimote to add control for Virtual Console games) support?

Every time Remote Buddy gets updated I get my credit card out in hopes that USB HID support has been added. For the longest time I've been waiting for some software that allows me to control my Mac with a video game controller. The addition of Wii support means it's almost ready for me to purchase.

Hi there,
I'm sure it's just me, but I am having some problems consistently pairing my Wiimote with Remote Buddy.

I thought it might be related to the fact I have two Wiimotes - anyone else having a similar problem? My thought process was that I had tried to pair both and had confused Remote Buddy.

Pressing buttons 1 & 2 has never worked, I'm interested in what others have to say. Red sync button works inconsistently for me, maybe I'm pressing it too early or too late.

Love the software, keep up the great work, just want to get the pairing issue figured out.
Cheers,
Ben

Hello Craig,

yes. I just need to get hold of a Classic Controller first. This
really is a (general) problem in Europe right now. For anything Wii
related.

And, this might help you with keeping an eye on Remote Buddy: I've
bought quite a few HID devices in December - I just didn't get around
to play around with them yet.

Felix

Hello Ben,

thanks for letting me know.

In fact, Remote Buddy's current Wii support is designed to support
virtually ANY number of Wii Remotes with your Mac. I just did not
have a chance to test this myself yet, since the second Wii Remote I
ordered did not make it to me, yet.

But, unless you don't try to pair both remotes at once, I don't see
any possible problem with the fact that you have two remotes.

Does one at a time work for you?

If not, please share a few details on your hardware with me (Mac
model, CPU, speed, OS version). If you don't want to post that
information here, please feel free to send me any information via the
contact form linked to at the end of each of the iospirit.com pages.

Best regards,
Felix

Hi Felix,
Thanks for your speedy response.
First answer, no, one at a time doesn't seem to consistently work.

But today I try it again. Start Remote Buddy and it prompts to press 1 & 2, I do it, and voila - it works. I then shut it down and then re-start and it was a lot more difficult then. 1 & 2 wouldn't work (neither would red sync button). I tried to pair both simultaneously to see if one would pair (really scientific I know) and nothing happened. I restarted the computer and then tried again, no luck first time but eventually one paired but it did have to try a few times on each wiimote before latching onto one (and then saying Wiimote 2 unable to pair).

As far as my mac goes....
Machine Name: iMac G5
Machine Model: PowerMac8,2
CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.0)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 2 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz

Even with the inconsistency (it works just not instantly every time), I am really really impressed with remote buddy (and my Wii as an aside - it's bloody awesome). And anyway, let's be honest, it's probably just me.

Hi Ben,

first off: you should never have to restart your Mac for a second,
third, .. attempt. Restarting Remote Buddy should be sufficient to
give you back a "clean" environment for further Bluetooth tests. I'm
not sure if this also applies for activate/deactiving the Bluetooth
receiver. It should, it really should, but all of the Wii code is
still to be considered highly experimental, so I can't give any
guarantees here.

Plus, because it just springs to mind: I noticed that sometimes
pairing will need a couple of seconds - sometimes even beyond the
point where the "press 1 & 2" prompt disappears.

I'll try to grab a Bluetooth USB dongle for the iBook G3 and the
PowerMac G5 next week to see whether it could be a timing issue or
its a general problem.

Best regards,
Felix

I have also had the same issue trying to pair my Wiimote.

I have just updated the Remote Buddy Software to Version 1 Preview 12 (RC1) and can no longer pair my Wiimote, however I had managed it once before the update.

When i press 1 and 2 it says the Nintendo RVL-CNT-01 found. Pairing!

But a few seconds later it says Pairing failed!

I have tried counteless times. I have tried disabling bluetooth. Restarting the software. Rebooting my iBook. But none of these has solve the problem. I have also tried the red sync button with no luck. Any possible suggestions? Cheers ;o)

My iBook's details are:
iBook G4
Machine Model: PowerBook6,7
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.5)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.42 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 768 MB
Bus Speed: 142 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.9.3f0

Hello Fred,

thanks for letting me know.

Preview 11 and Preview 12 do only differ in a couple lines of code
that re-add the detection for PowerPoint (and possible other Carbon
apps that store their bundle info in an undocumented manner). I
thought this fix was important enough for many users to qualify for a
quick update. All other code, including that regarding the Wii
remote, has gone unchanged, though.

One thing you shouldn't do though is to enable and disable Bluetooth
while Remote Buddy is running. I've had Bluetooth turned off myself
most of the time - and re-enabling it only seconds before launching
Remote Buddy does seem to have a negative effect on the pairing
process. OS X seems to need some time to put Bluetooth back into
operation.

I hope to remind myself on buying a Bluetooth stick on Thursday, so I
can debug any timing issues with my slowest Mac (iBook G3).

Best regards,
Felix
