What does Enable Ad Hoc Receiver do?

Does anyone know what "Enable Ad Hoc Receiver" is for? It's found inside Prefs:General:Advanced.

This option enables and disables an experimental, internal Remote 
Buddy driver API. It is currently recommended to leave it disabled.
