Long RB uptime causes jittery video
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
I have a mini with 1GB ram - so at first I thought that tight ram was causing some slower framerates. (the mini uses a graphics card that uses RAM for VRAM)

However when I quit my most memory intensive app, freeing up plenty, the problem does not go away.

It is only after quiting RB that smooth playback returns. I'm going to continue investigating this, I'm not sure what might be going on.

This only happens if RB has been running for several days.

Thanks for dropping me that note.

Remote Buddy doesn't alter its system usage pattern over time, so I'd
not know how it - or rather what in Remote Buddy - could cause such a
problem.

What's the memory usage of Remote Buddy (both physical and vmem) at
the time you experience this problem (you can look up both values in
Activity Monitor)?

Also, which OS version do you have in use?

Best regards,
Felix

Felix,

Thanks for your reply.

This just happened again, and I checked the memory.

RB's mem usage had gone up to 102 real, and 460 virtual

There was still several hundred MB of free memory.

This seems high. I had been suspicious of a mem leak in RB once before. Also to trim down memory use I removed all the built in behaviors from the app package (I don't use them) - maybe I'm only saving a little.

One of the other video artifacts of this issue is that RB's own fade in / fade out animations are slow and jerky. Like I said, quit and relaunch RB and all is well again. Now that I've purchased RB, I might just run a nightly cron job to quit and relaunch it.

Thanks for the info!

102 MB real is definately too much. It should be more like 20-50 MB
(depending on the number of Behaviours loaded and used).

Are there any functions that you do use very frequently?

(seeking for a memory leak in as big an app as Remote Buddy can be
*very* time-consuming without having an idea where memory might be
leaking)

Felix
