Remote Buddy - Problems with remotes (Sony BD/EyeTV)
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Hi!

By now I'm only testing remote buddy - but I do find it really interesting. I really would by it instantly if there wouldn't be such huge problems with the remotes.

I'm using a Mac Mini PPC (the old model without a built in receiver). At first I tried it with EyeTV (I'm having a terratec model).

There I had the problem that EyeTV crashed regularly. Additionally the keys often repeated itself - although I pressed them only once.

So I bought a Sony Remote - but with this I'm having the problem that it loses connection every few minutes - sometimes every few seconds. Then I have to remove the batteries for a few seconds to move on.

I looked into the faq. But the distance is short (less than 2 meters) and I already replaced the batteries. The power save isn't enabled.

Where is the problem?

Try replacing the batteries with new ones and see what happens. Usually I get the same issues as you do whenever batteries are low in power.

Thanks for asking.

I don't think that this crash is in any way related to Remote Buddy.

Are you running the latest version of EyeTV? If yes, please file a bug
report with Elgato including the crash log.

So I bought a Sony Remote - but with this I'm having the problem
that it loses connection every few minutes - sometimes every few
seconds. Then I have to remove the batteries for a few seconds to
move on.

Given your description, I definately would say that this is a battery
issue. If you are using rechargeable batteries, please be sure that
these have enough capacity, enough power left in them and have not
reached the end of their life cycle already.

Also, once paired via the Setup Wizard, you should just press any (and
only one) button on your remote to re-connect it to Remote Buddy. The
button combination you are prompted to press should achieve the same,
but if pressed for too long, it will also reset your remote's
connection repeatedly which could also give you what you are seeing
right now.

It is. Regularly I don't have any crashes with EyeTV. When using the Terratec remote EyeTV quits randomly (and silent) (when I'm not using EyeTV - mostly when I'm using frontrow)

I don't have these crashes when using the Sony remote or without using Remote Buddy.

Are you running the latest version of EyeTV?

It's the 2.6.3. That is the latest 2.x version.

So I bought a Sony Remote - but with this I'm having the problem

I have enabled power save by now. This seems to help.

It would be really fine to get a message when battery is low.

Hi Michael,

thanks for the info.

Your report of EyeTV crashing is the first I receive and the two are
widely used together. And Remote Buddy doesn't change anything in
EyeTV (or any other application). Thus my surprise. Please send me the
crash logs you are having (=> you can find them in ~/Library/
CrashReporter/ ), so I can take a closer look on what is going on and
possibly forward it to Elgato.

A low battery indicator for the BD Remote is on my todo list.

I looked into the CrashReporter-folder (BTW: I found it under Library/Logs/CrashReporter) and haven't found anything. Maybe there is some issue whith RB is sending "quit application"? I will watch it further and when I have any evidence I will tell.

Remote Buddy does not send any quit events or signals to EyeTV. The
only time at which it would send a quit event is when you expressly
select "Quit application" from the Remote Buddy menu. Are you sure the
application is really crashing?
