Front Row direct volume control using optical audio out
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
With Remote Buddy, is there any way to directly control volume in Front Row Music when outputting via optical audio out? Currently, I believe the only way is to hit menu first, and then access the iTunes volume control in the menu. If it is possible, how do I configure this? and if not, will it be possible any time soon?

If you are in "currently playing" in front row then you already are able to adjust the volume by default...

If you want to adjust the volume from within the front row menu's too then just set "itunes vol up" to the "front row behaviour > up key (hold)"
But then you are loosing the ability to switch fast up and down thru the menus by holding the remote button up/down...

Hello David,

thanks for asking. While in Front Row, keep Menu pressed until the
Remote Buddy menu appears. You'll then have a volume slider for
iTunes available in that menu, which allows you to control iTunes
volume in Front Row anywhere in it.

Best regards,

Felix, I have been using this feature as you described, and it works great if I want to just set a level for an album, but when i'm either in shuffle mode or in a playlist I would like to control volume much more quickly since volume levels from song to song can vary quite significantly.

I just noticed that my initial post may have not have been that clear. What I was trying to find out was... Is there going to be any way in the future to set Remote Buddy so that the volume control directly adjusts iTunes volume while in Front Row "Now Playing" without having to hit menu first and not having to adjust the iTunes volume in the Remote Buddy menu? I hope that all made sense.

Hello David,

thanks for explaining in more detail.

The problem there is, that Remote Buddy can only send emulated
keystrokes to Front Row and does not know what they will trigger. So,
if you press the + and - buttons on your remote, FR may either
scroll, adjust volume or do something else and Remote Buddy will not
know about it. In consequence, it can also not know when FR is
expected to adjust volume and when it will react differently. So a
transparent replacement does not seem to be possible without patching
Front Row, which I'll avoid. You can, however, map the iTunes volume
plus / minus controls to the "Plus (held)" and "Minus (held)" button
mapping entries for Front Row, so single clicks will still allow you
to scroll while holding the buttons will increase and decrease the
iTunes volume.

Hope that helps.

Best regards,
Felix

There is still a small issue with this. Doing this means you can't "fast scroll," which is not very good if you have a lot of music in your library. How does the program differentiate between scrolling and Core Volume control when in FrontRow? Can the same thing be done but controlling the iTunes volume instead?

Hello Joseph,

thanks for asking.

Remote Buddy doesn't differentiate between scrolling and volume
control in Front Row. It simply sends cursor key up and down events
to Front Row, which then triggers the actions as appropriate.

Customizing or replacing the actions triggered inside Front Row is
not possible. Only Apple can make changes at that level.
