Powerpoint is not recognized

Hi,

I just bought Remote Buddy. It is working fine for most applications, but not for Powerpoint (PowerPoint 2004, version 11.3.2).

To be exact, the menu still says: "Active behaviour: Default Behaviour", while I would expect it to say "Active Behaviour: Powerpoint".

I tried to rename "Microsoft PowerPoint" to simply "PowerPoint", as the name mentioned in the Preferences. I briefly trief to create a custom behaviour myself using the Behaviour Construction Kit, but that was non-trivial, since I could not select any Powerpoint-specific actions. However, I did learn the bundle identifier: "com.microsoft.PowerPoint". I tried to check if Remote Buddy uses the same identifier (Microsoft did release update 11.3.2 for Office on December 19, perhaps something was changed there). However, "strings Remote Buddy.app/Contents/PlugIns/PowerPoint.rbbehaviour/Contents/MacOS/PowerPoint" didn't yield any results I could decipher.

So: How do I get Microsoft PowerPoint to work with Remote Buddy???

Oh, for your info, I use:
- Microsoft Office 2004 educational license. Version 11.3.2 (061207)
- Remote Buddy 1.0 Preview 11 (RC1) (registered)

Hello Freek,

thanks for letting me know.

Remote Buddy will only present you the "Activate Default Behaviour"
menu item, if it can't recognize any forground or one of a few
selected background applications. It is using
"com.microsoft.PowerPoint" for recognition right now.

Do you have PowerPoint running and is it the frontmost AND active
application when you press the menu button?

In the preferences, does "PowerPoint" turn up in the list of
Behaviours on the left in the "Mapping" category? And if so, does it
offer you a range of actions (just asking to make sure it's not using
your own Behaviour)?

Finally, you may try to run LSRefresh on PowerPoint (you can grab
LSRefresh from the Blog on this site) and subsequently restart Remote
Buddy.

Best regards,
Felix

I do think so. At least, the frontmost window is PowerPoint and the menubar says "PowerPoint". What is the difference between frontmost and active?

Behaviours on the left in the "Mapping" category? And if so, does it

Yes; it does show up there, with all default settings. In fact, I just installed Remote Buddy, and did not pursue making an alternative behaviour. I clicked "Reset to default mapping" to make sure.

That seems like a good thing. Unfortunately, it did not work, even not after restarting both PowerPoint and Remote Buddy.

Next, I'll re-install Remote Buddy, and reboot my computer. See if that works. Are there preference files in unusual locations I can trash? Perhaps, I can re-install PowerPoint (that should be a simple drag and drop) or try on my desktop computer (though that doesn't have a Apple remote). I think I didn't upgrade PowerPoint there yet.

If that does not work, I am inclined to check the method that Remote Buddy uses to determine the frontmost and/or active application.

I am not sure how to do it, without switching applications. Perhaps an apple script that calls a shell command. I once did it the other way around, perhaps this is possible too. Does Remote Buddy only uses this "bundle identifier" ("com.microsoft.PowerPoint")? Do you know a way to get that info in AppleSCript or command line tool?

Hi Freek,

THANK YOU! The last section of your post just made me remember I did
rewrite the fronmost app detection routine in RC1.

And, yes, I forgot to add support for PowerPoint-style legacy bundle
information. I'll upload a fixed version of Remote Buddy in a couple
of minutes. It will have the same version number, so it won't be
automatically detected through the online updater.

Just download in an hour from now from http://www.iospirit.com/
remotebuddy/download/ and you should have the new version.

Best regards,
Felix

Thanks. It works fine now.

Actually, it didn't work at first. Apparently Firefox cached the download or so, and I was trying the old version, and I couldn't tell since the version wasn't changed :-)
