Remote while not using remote buddy
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Hello!
I have tried Remote Buddy for several days, but now I have got some problem without any answar - help me please! While I am using Remote Buddy, there is no problems at all with Apple Remote. Everything works like it should. But when I quit Remote Buddy, I'd like to use my remote like before, but it is impossible. For example, before installing Remote Buddy I could prezent Keynote prezentation and when I pressed MENU button, I could use slide switcher. Now, when I press MENU, I can only go to Front Row - no other chance. The same with DVD Player - MENU doesn't go to DVD menu, but runs front row.. etc. Is it possible to use Remote buddy when I want, but, when it is inactive, use other remote features like before?
Thanks,
Valdis

Hello Valdis,

thanks for asking.

Remote Buddy does not alter the Behaviour of the Apple Remote in any
way beyond the time it is running. When it is running, it makes sure
Apple's rcd.app (a small background app that executes AppleScript
snippets for every press on the Apple Remote) does not get any of the
Apple Remote's input. When you quit it, it releases the lock on the
remote‘s signals, so the system returns to normal and will behave
exactly as if you had never run Remote Buddy before.

If Remote Buddy in not running, your Mac will *always* bring up Front
Row when you press the Menu button. That's the way Apple designed it.

Well, actually I am quite sure, that I could control Keynote prezentation with remote before I installed Remote Buddy. But in this case I have another question. When I press MENU button, Remote Buddy window pops up. By the other hand, in many programs you cau do many things by pressing and holding MENU button. I wanted to ask, is it possible to change the meaning of these buttons? For example to pop up the remote buddy window, when I pres and hold the MENU button? Change the meanings of MENU pressing and MENU holding. Is it possible and if yes, then how!
Thank you in advance,

Valdis

In shorter form - I understand how to change tho meanings for programs, but is it possible to change menu(held) with menu meaning?

Yes, you can control Keynote presentations using the Apple Remote. If
Apple feels you have the right Mac for it (i.e. this works on my
MacBook Pro, but not on my iMac Core Duo). But - without Remote Buddy
being active - the Menu button always will make Front Row show up.

I repeat: Remote Buddy does not, can not and did not alter the
default behaviour of the Apple Remote on your computer. It contains
no such code nor would I know of any way to achieve this. Apple
Remote default actions are hardcoded in Apple's rcd.app, which seems
to send messages and execute AppleScripts to achieve the default
behaviour. It is a system background process and as such there is no
way to alter the way it performs without patching it - which would -
by the way - require root rights. Which means, it would have to ask
you for permission. And then, there is not a single reason why Remote
Buddy would want to patch that system background process.

Right now, you can't customize which button opens the Remote Buddy
menu. This is planned for future releases, though.

Felix
