Apple remote is deactivated after reboot
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
I have installed the actual update. Since then the Apple remote is always deactivated after a reboot in remote buddy. EyeTV starts up normally, but pressing the Apple remote after reboot, stopps EyeTV und opens Front Row. I have to go then to the Remote buddy symbol and activate the Apple remote manually. As I us the mini as mediacenter in the living room, but for my wife as a computer dummy it is not possible for her to handle this issue. And also the WAF is very low. I allready thougt about to go back on the prior release, but I like the new iTunes features. What can I do, that the Apple remote stays activated also after a reboot.
Thanks
Jochen

Hello Jochen,

nothing changed in that regard with the current release. All that
might be different is the timing. On startup, whichever application
gets control over the remote first will win - and keep it (there are
exceptions Remote Buddy usually makes use of, but again, on startup,
there are timing issues).

The temporary fix is to not start EyeTV upon system startup and then
start it via Remote Buddy.

The final, more elegant fix for this problem is scheduled for the
next release.

Best regards,
Felix

Hi Felix,

I experience the same problem.
This is what i tried :

I went to system preferences > Accounts > Login items.

First i choose Remote buddy as a login item , and then Eye TV.(i want to start eye tv automatically)

Now you should say that when booting , Remote buddy takes control over de remote first

Out of my mind , i think this is indeed is the case the first time , but after a second boot, later on , i notice that Remote Buddy is disappeared out of the login item - list.

So , again , habe the same problem of eye tv taking over control.

How come ?

Hello Rob,

thanks for asking.

It shouldn't matter too much which entry is first in the Login Items
pane. Remember OS X is a multitasking operation system and it seems
to launch all of the Login Items at once (or shortly after each
another). I've had Safari and Mail in my Login Items a while back and
they were both bouncing around happily in the Dock.

What is happening on your Macs is probably this:

1) EyeTV and Remote Buddy start up - at once.

2) EyeTV is quicker with grabbing the Apple Remote.

3) Remote Buddy tries a technique to make EyeTV drop control over the
remote, but it fails for timing reasons, as EyeTV can probably not
respond in a timely fashion while the system is still occupied with
startup tasks that eat plenty of CPU and I/O resources. The technique
works fine, if there is less load on the system - but it can fail in
this situation of high load. That's why it'll work sometimes - and
not work at other times you start up your Mac.

The (definitive) solution for this problem will hopefully finally
make it in the next release of Remote Buddy.

Best regards,
Felix
