Problem with VLC and the Movie Library folder structure
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Greetings!

Yesterday I found out about RemoteBuddy - what a great piece of software!!

However I have encountered a problem when trying to access files in the Movie Library folder structure via VLC from inside the RemoteBuddy interface.
I have ripped DVDs into folders like:
MovieX / VIDEO_TS
MovieX / AUDIO_TS
And I have avi’s in folders like:
MovieY / VIDEO_TS / MovieY.avi
Both ripped DVDs and avi’s are fully functional from VLC when using it outside of RemoteBuddy but when I try to access the same files from inside RemoteBuddy using “VLC Media Player / Movie Library / MovieX” I get the following error messages from VLC:
"vcd: search for kIOCDMediaClass came up empty
vcd: failed to get the TOC
vcd: no movie tracks found
access_file: file /dev/rdisk3s2 is empty, aborting
cdda: search for kIOCDMediaClass came up empty
cdda: failed to get the TOC
cdda: no audio tracks found
vcd: search for kIOCDMediaClass came up empty
vcd: failed to get the TOC
vcd: no movie tracks found
access_file: file /dev/rdisk3s2 is empty, aborting
cdda: search for kIOCDMediaClass came up empty
cdda: failed to get the TOC
cdda: no audio tracks found
main: no suitable access module for `/dev/rdisk3s2'"

The ripped DVD files plays with Apple DVD-player via Remote Buddy and the avi-files plays in VLC via Remote Buddy if I select the actual file (i.e. not the file in the movie library folder structure).

Your help is much appreciated!!

Edit: I use VLC 0.8.6a.

Hello Mats,

thanks for asking.

I have no idea what might cause this. Doing a quick web search of one
of the strings yielded this URL, though:

Have you tried updating your copy of VLC to the latest version / are
you using the latest version of VLC?

All Remote Buddy really does is to open the respective folder with
VLC, which in effect is just like if you dragged it onto the VLC icon
in the Dock.

Best regards,
Felix

Hi Felix and thanks for your answer!

Yes I am using the latest version of VLC i.e. 0.8.6a.

However, I have continued troubleshooting and I have found something interesting depending on where the Movie Library folder structure is placed.

If the Movie Library folder structure is placed on the internal harddrive or on an external USB harddrive it works fine to open files via “Movie Library” under VLC in the RemoteBuddy interface.
Nevertheless, and this is where it get’s interesting, if the same Movie Library folder structure is placed in an image file (that is mounted on the desktop) VLC will display the error message shown above. It does not matter whether the image file is a regular image (i.e. .dmg) or a sparseimage. And it does not matter whether the image file is placed on the internal drive or the external harddrive.

Files from the Movie Library folder structure placed on an image (dmg or sparseimage) work fine if they are opened from within the VLC application itself (i.e. outside the RemoteBuddy interface) and they (the DVD-rips i.e.) also work if they are played with Apple DVD Player in the RemoteBuddy interface.

To summarize: this problem only occurs if one wants to play a movie file, placed on an image, from “Movie Library” in VLC via the RemoteBuddy interface.

I hope this information will give you an idea how to fix the problem.
Keep up the good job!
Mats

Hello Mats,

thanks for letting me know. I do think it's a bug inside VLC that
mistakes a mounted DMG for a real CD/DVD drive. I'll nonetheless
investigate possible workarounds.

Just out of curiosity: Why do you store your DVDs as image files?

Thanks!

Best regards,
Felix
