- Please make sure you have the latest version of Remote Buddy installed. If in doubt, download the latest version, quit Remote Buddy, delete it, empty your trash, then copy the downloaded version of Remote Buddy to your harddrive and start it from there.
- Please make sure, that you have installed the latest version of the Remote Buddy drivers. You can install the drivers using the Setup Wizard (=> access it via the Remote Buddy pulldown menu).
- Check your Remote Buddy settings in the Hardware category. Your remote control should be listed there and the lamp next to it should be green. If you don't find your remote control there, either the Remote Buddy drivers were not installed or installed in an outdated version - or - there is a general problem with the device. For USB devices, plugging the device to another port or resetting the PMU and/or SMC-unit of your Mac® (=> find guides on how to do this for your Mac® in the support area of apple.com) may help. If you can't find it under "USB" in the System Profiler (=> /Applications/Utilities) either, a hardware defect is as well possible.
- Check the batteries of your remote control.
- If your remote control has an on/off switch: make sure that your remote control is switched on.
- If your remote control requires additional receiver hardware: make sure that it is correctly attached to your computer and that it turns up in System Profiler.
- If you use an Apple® Remote, you should also check your system settings. Quit Remote Buddy, then open System Preferences.app > Security. Please make sure that the option to disable the infrared receiver is NOT active and click on "Unpair" should you have paired your Apple® Remote with your Mac®. After that, start Remote Buddy. If your Apple® Remote still doesn't work with Remote Buddy, please also check its preferences for the Apple® Remote. They can be found at Preferences > Hardware > Built-in IR receiver. If support for multiple remote controls is enabled there, ensure that your remote control is checked in the right table (=> you can find the correct entry for your remote control by pressing a button on it).
- If you are using a Keyspan™ RF Remote for Front Row, re-pair its remote control and receiver by simultaneously pressing the small knob on the back of the remote control and the knob on the receiver stick (the knob looks like the blinking LED, except it does not blink).
Hardware - Apple® Remote
To enable you to use all capabilities of the IR Receiver of your Mac®, Remote Buddy is using its own driver. In contrast, all other applications with integrated Apple® Remote support usually use the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem.
As long as you're running Remote Buddy, Remote Buddy and its driver are responsible for turning the received button presses into actions. As soon as you quit Remote Buddy, this task is again handled by the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem.
If other applications don't use the interface to the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem correctly, this can lead to the effect that nothing happens when you press a button on your Apple® Remote. For as long as you're running Remote Buddy, issues like this are covered by Remote Buddy and it's driver and are therefore not visible to you. However, as soon as you quit Remote Buddy, the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem is back in control and any issues caused in it by other applications become visible.
Therefore Remote Buddy is neither the cause of the issue nor is it responsible for it. Instead, the cause of the issue exists independently of Remote Buddy. It's located elsewhere and can also only be solved there.
Although our products can't cause any such issues, we're regularly contacted about such issues and asked for help. In order to make locating and fixing the cause of such issues as easy and efficient as possible, we've developed a free diagnostics tool: Remote Control Diagnostics. It can locate issues with a single click and will provide you with information about the issue as well as with instructions on how you can fix it.

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Hi, thanks for the report. I've just tried to reproduce this with a Wii Remote and an Apple Remote, both of which work fine. I also didn't touch that part of the code for quite some time. What screensaver are you using? Best regards, Felix

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Hi Felix Thaks for the answer. I have an Apple Remote and a PowerBook Pro. I am using Apples "Computer Name" Screen saver. Is it possible some old setting from an older version of remote buddy. Should I try to remove the settings? Thanks a lot DerHeld [Edit]: I have moved the settings to the new folder and restarted RemoteBuddy but I still can't deactivate the screen saver with the Apple Remote. The keypresses are recieved by Remote Buddy (tested with the volume up/down) but the screen saver does not get deactivated. What can/should I do. Thaks a lot for your help DerHeld Last edited: 12.03.2007 21:46:31

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Hi, thanks for sharing. This settings has not changed since it was introduced, so it's unlikely that this is caused by the evolution of Remote Buddy. It's still worth a try, though. That feature works really fine here with an iMac Core Duo, Apple Remote and the same screensaver. How do you trigger that screensaver? Anything special there? Best regards, Felix

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Hi Felix I have tried and resettet Remote Buddy settings but it still does not work. I don't know what else to try. It does not matter how I trigger the screensaver. I have the screen saver to start if I go to the left top corner or to start automatically after 3 minutes. The display goes to sleep after 15 minutes and the computer after 30 minutes. I have a 30 inch apple screen pluged in to my Power Book Pro and the lid is closed. Should I send you my settings? Could this help you? Thanks a lot for trying to fix this for me. DerHeld | User 18.03.2007 16:55:02 | Re: Re: deactivate sceen saver on button press does not work | |
This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. If you could send me your settings (=> the info @ .. email address is fine) for the screensaver and Remote Buddy, that could help. Is the problem solved, if you set it the screen saver becoming active to the upper, right corner? I still don't see how the ScreenSaverEngine could ignore Remote Buddy sending "activity" to the system *and* moving the mouse cursor back and forth by one pixel (=> real quick, so you'll usually not notice). This could well be a problem in OS X itself. Best regards, Felix

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Hi Felix It's really strage. I set the screen saver to activate in all the 4 corners. It worked on the right top and bottom but not left top and bottom. Could you please fix this. The rest seems to work now. If the screen saver goes on from himself (after 3 minutes) I can deactivate it mit the remote. If you want I can still send you the settings. I think the problem could be that if the screen saver is activated from the corner and remote buddy deactivates the screensaver throu the ScreenSaverEngine and afterwords you move the mouse cursor 1 pixel the screen saver gets activated again, because it's still in the corner. But I still don't understand why it works on the right corners and not on the left corners. I hope this helps fixing this bug. Regards DerHeld

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Thanks for the info. It's in fact very useful. I think it leads me directly to the root of the problem. I could reproduce and fix the problem. Best regards, Felix Am 21.03.2007 um 21:00 schrieb John Doe: Hi Felix It's really strage. I set the screen saver to activate in all the 4 corners. This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Hi Felix, this problem appears to have resurfaced, at least for me. I am using the "Message" screensaver in OS 10.9.4 and when I have it set to the left top corner, button presses do not go through, but instead queue up until I wake the screensaver, but when the screensaver is set to activate in the right top corner, button presses appear to briefly wake the screensaver and register normally. Thanks for your great product!

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Thanks for the info! What do you mean by "button presses do not go through, but instead queue up until I wake the screensaver"? How does that show? Thanks, Felix
