Remote Buddy + Andrew Escobar FrontRow Hack
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
I'm having no luck activating FrontRow on my PowerMac G5 -- installed using Andrew Escobar's hack.

http://www.andrewescobar.com/frontrow

When I activate the FrontRow behavior using my remote, nothing happens. In fact, it seems to temporarily disable Remote Buddy from working until I open the preference panel. Weird, huh?

I've set up FrontRow to launch when the F2 key is pressed, but I can't figure out how to tell this to RemoteBuddy. Any ideas?

Hello Scott,

thanks for your posting.

Remote Buddy does not emulate keystrokes to active Front Row. Thus,
the hotkey you use shouldn't matter at all.

Which version of Front Row and Mac OS X are you running?
Can you activate Front Row using your keyboard?

If you can activate it by keyboard, you can easily set up a custom
action to emulate an F2 keypress on your system.

Best regards,
Felix

Felix, thanks for your help. Based on your comments/questions, I began to suspect that I had a faulty installation of the Andrew Escobar FrontRow hack.

After installing the latest versions of FrontRow and the FrontRowEnabler, my remote could activate FrontRow as expected. Problem solved!

ScottR, I'm having the exact same issue on my G4 mac mini. (I had installed a Front Row hack earlier.) Can you tell me how you got your install straightened-out?

Thanks!

It should work flawlessly provided that you are using the latest
versions of all software involved.

I can personally confirm what Felix said. After I installed the latest version of Front Row and Andrew Escobar's hack, I was up & running again. Best of luck!

Thanks guys. I reinstalled some system components using the FAQ here: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/removefrontrowhack.html
Then used Andrew's Enabler to get the latest FrontRow installed.

I came across a little issue where my previous FrontRow hack had set itself as a Start-up Item (under User Accounts) and was causing FrontRow to launch twice---which bogged-my mac down. But when I removed it from the Start-up Items list and rebooted...

Presto! Everything works much more smoothly.

Thanks guys. I hope my tidbit above will help someone else too.

Thanks for sharing!

Just as a quick sidenote: Front Row should never be in your list of
startup items (in User Accounts) in the first place. It's launched
through different mechanisms.

Felix
