Bluetooth Issue with Kernel Installed and Hybernation
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Hey Felix,

Just a moment to say, Remote Buddy really is just constantly becoming a stellar app! Congrats! I remember it when it just had a few behaviors and looked (by the design now) almost old fashioned....haha

Anyway, I did uncover an issue concerning the Kernel Extension and the built in bluetooth on my MacBook Pro.

Here is the scenario:

1. When I take my MBP with me I kick on the hibernation feature on the Mac. There is a way to kick it on in Terminal, but I just use the following widget: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/deepsleep.html

2. This has always worked fine, until I downloaded and installed the release of RB that introduced the Kernel Extension.

3. Now when I boot up from "software-suspended" state, my bluetooth icon shows no bluetooth is installed and I must reboot in order to recover it.

4. "Software-suspended" state is also the state the Powerbooks and Macbooks go into when switching out the battery, etc. So people beyond those of us who use this feature like I do, would be effected by this issue.

5. After troubleshooting, I was able to link it to the kernel extension. Once that was uninstalled, it went back to working normally.

Hope you can track this bugger down.

Thanks!

(Looking forward to remote pairing when using an external IR receiver. <SMILE> I know, I am a pain!)

Thank you Felix!

Hey Erick,

thanks for the information. I am not able to reproduce it, though
with my MBP and the Deep Sleep Widget.

After my MBP wakes up, the Bluetooth icon first shows unavailability,
but changes to available a second later.

So I did a bit research and stumbled over

http://andrewescobar.com/archive/ 2005/11/11/how-to-safe-sleep-your-mac/

and

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4516751&tstart=0

where loads of people report about problems with safe sleep and
Bluetooth. From what I can extract from it, this seems to be a
problem with the menu extra that displays that icon as killing/
restarting the SystemUI server (which drives these menu extras but
has no relation to Bluetooth at all as far as I can say) "solves" the
problem. Bluetooth seems to work just fine even if the menu extra
displays the wrong status.

The problem also doesn't seem to be consistent for those affected
according to the latter link.

That said, I also wouldn't know how the Remote Buddy Kernel Extension
could cause this as it does not contain any code that could hinder
the kernel extension for the Bluetooth hardware in the MBP from loading.

Hope that helps.

Best regards,
Felix
