some feedback for remote buddy
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Hi, I've downloaded remote buddy demo and I am very impressed with it. I am currently waiting for my ATI Remote Wonder Plus to come in and I'm eager to see how well this will work! [Update: Didn't like the ATI Remote Wonder Plus. I am returning it.]

RB is very close to ideal and I'm very happy that I can now easily toggle subtitles and launch any of my DVD rips very easily.

One thing I would like to ask: Is it possible to make Remote Buddy more media centric? I'd like a slick interface much more like Front Row if possible. I am more interested in browsing my movies and media directly from remote buddy and launching them... don't really want to have to go to Remote Buddy, Launch DVD Player, go to Remote Buddy again, choose Movie. I'd rather go to Remote Buddy and launch Movie directly just like in Front Row.

Another issue: I have increased the font size on my Mac Mini because I use it as an HTPC and the fonts are way too small for me to read on my HDTV. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to work too well with Remote Buddy. Any chance this will be fixed in a future release?

Thanks a lot for your quality work on a quality application!

Thanks for the feedback!

You can launch a movie directly using either the recent files submenu
- or, if you organize your movies as VIDEO_TS folders - via the Movie
Library that's (in V1.1) available via

DVD Player > Movie Library
VLC > Movie Library

Neither of both apps need be started prior to that.

Thanks for the screenshot as well. I'll try to fix the problem as
soon as I know how to reproduce it. Where did you change the font size?

Best regards,
Felix

Thanks for the response, Felix! I'm really grateful that there is someone like you out there putting so much effort into this software.

I see what you mean about being able to launch movies without having to activate the behaviour first. Is there way to put the Movies folder at the top level menu?

For the fonts issue... I changed my fonts using the TinkerTool freeware. RB isn't the only application that has trouble with the fonts, but it would be nice for RB to either accommodate bigger fonts or to force smaller fonts so that the text isn't truncated.

TinkerTool is here: http://www.bresink.com/osx/TinkerTool.html

Thanks!!

Oh, yes, sure, you can do that.

Just go to Preferences > Menu and either pick the pre-created,
editable copy of the default profile or create a new one. You can
drag and drop the Movies folder at the top level there then, if you
so want.

I've added the TinkerTool issue to the ToDo list and will investigate
it later. Basically, as a developer, you provide a subclass of NSCell
to the NSTableView - and just keep using the font that is already set
up - which works fine and should be compatible with future versions
of OS X. So I'm a bit afraid to break compatibility with Leopard in
favor of an unsupported feature TinkerTool makes use of. But I'll
have to see about that.

Felix

Hi Felix,

I just received my Keyspan Express Remote, and have started using the demo of Remote Buddy.
I would like to second RB's request to make Remote Buddy a little bit more "media centric"... or more customising options beyond the profile root menu

Remote Buddy is a very deep program it seems and a bit overwhelming, when all I want to do is simple, dummy-proof stuff.

It took me a while to understand the phrase "activate behaviour" (it's not something you would find in a off the shelf dvd-player menu or television set)
I would love to create a very simple menu with stuff like "play music" or "play dvd", that would automatically take me to the corresponding items. When choosing "play music" I might want to search through my artist library, without first having to activate a behaviour.
Frontrow is a very nice example of this kind of simplicity.
Ultimatly it would be nice if it felt more like a media system, where as now it still feels like a computer being controlled.

Another nice detail would be the possibility to have a full screen backdrop which hides the desktop and menu bar..this would certainly help a lot I think

Also, is there a possibility to turn off the button mapping display beside the "activate behaviour", I find it confusing and cluttering...

Hi there!

Thanks for the feedback.

As for the media centressness: Remote Buddy's evolution will
certainly not stand still ;-)

Regarding the simplified Behaviour menus: thanks for the thoughtful
comment. You can remove items you don't want or add items you do want
using drag and drop in the list(s) at

Preferences > Behaviours > _Behaviour_Of_Your_Choice > Context menu

The button mapping display can't be removed or disabled at this
point. But as said: evolution never stops ;-)

Best regards,
Felix
