MythFrontend response during playback
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
This question is specific to using MythFrontend with Remote Buddy, but perhaps others have had this experience:

I find that during playback within Mythtv I need to press at least two buttons before the first is recognized. For example, I can hit Play/Pause once and nothing will happen. I hit it a second time, and the video will pause and immediately play again. To actually toggle Play/Pause, I need to hit the button 3 times in rapid succession.

This isn't the case during Myth menu navigation, only during playback. It only affects the remote response - hitting "P" on the keyboard once will pause/play the video as expected. The problem occurs whether I'm using the apple IR remote or the Wiimote.

Has anyone else seen this?

Hello Steve,

thanks for asking. I'm not able to reproduce it for the lack of a
MythTV setup. However, if P on a regular keyboard works, so should
the Remote Buddy action. Except, there are many different ways to
send a keystroke on OS X.

So, I've created to variants for you to test:

http://www.wapapp.de/MythFrontend.rbscriptedbehaviour.zip
(sending a single keypress between press and release)

http://www.wapapp.de/MythFrontend.rbscriptedbehaviour_2.zip
(sending a single keypress between press and release, but does send
it to MythTV as a global keypress rather than a local one)

Please let me know, if both, one or none of them solve the problem.

Best regards,
Felix

Hi Felix,

Thanks again for your help. Yes, the first behavior you sent (single key between press & release) worked for play/pause.

Here's what I don't understand: when I go into Preferences>Behaviors>Button Mapping and select "Custom Actions" for the Play/Pause (A) button, I can create an action named "Play/Pause" and choose single key between press & release as well as other options. But when I do this and change these options, I see no effect. How did you get it to work? Do I need to go into the Behavior Construction Kit and create another MythFrontend behavior (in addition to the default one already in RB)?

Hi Steve,

thanks for the feedback. I meant to say "Single key press on button
press", sorry. Choosing this option as well as sending it directly to
MythTVFrontEnd will give you the same results as with the revised
Behaviour 1 I sent you.

Are there any other actions that do not work as expected? I'll roll
it in the next update then or make it available via the Online
Updater in the meantime.

Best regards,
Felix

Actually, I spoke to soon...

What happens when I select "Single key press on button press" is that I have to wait about 15 seconds for the action to happen (it is instantaneous with the keyboard). However, if I press another button during the 15 second waiting period, both actions happen immediately.

I have tried all of the various keystroke behavior options (key press on button press, press & release, press & release & autorepeat, etc) as well as toggling the option to send the keystroke directly to the application. None of these trials improved the 15 second delay. It seems that when the myth video player is active, it is somehow interfering with processing remote buddy signals, but still is receptive to the keyboard...

Hello Steve,

do you see this behaviour only in the Myth Video Player or also in
other parts of the application?

Felix,

The behavior occurs only during playback - i.e. when the MythFrontend internal video player is playing a stored recording/video file.

There is "built-in" support for the Apple remote in version 0.20 of Myth. When I quit Remote Buddy and use the Apple remote, I don't get the delays/missed keys. So I now believe it is an issue with process priorities within MythFrontend - ignoring other apps in order to ensure the video player has enough resources during playback.

Thanks for your response and help with this issue. I've just now taken the question to the Myth Users' mailing list to see if there is an adjustment possible from the Myth side in order to allow a more frequent polling of Remote Buddy activity.

Thanks for your support!

Please let me know if you get any info as to what might be the
problem. Remote Buddy goes through the official APIs to emulate
keystrokes, so they should be received just like normal key presses
on the keyboard.

Felix
