Time Capsule Crashes
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Hi,

Recently Remote Buddy has started to crash my time capsule on startup. This has started happening in the last two weeks. It kills my internet connection and the capsule drops off the network. I have done a complete reinstall of Leopard and remote buddy but to no avail. Anyone else having this problem or have any ideas?

Thanks for asking,

I don't see any way how Remote Buddy could crash a time capsule,
internet connection. It doesn't contain any code that could do this.
The only network code in Remote Buddy are the RapidHTTPD server (for
AJAX Remote) and the Online Updater and Online Verification, all of
which are several thick layers of protocols and abstraction away from
any network hardware.

With regards to wireless LAN reliability/stability, two things worth
knowing are:

- Bluetooth can negatively influence other 802.11 networks (like WiFi/
WLAN connnections) on a physical level: they share the same radio
frequency range. Apple explicitely mentions this in their Bluetooth
documentation. The Wii Remote, f.ex., causes a lot of Bluetooth
traffic - even when not connected, as it needs to be actively searched
(polled) for.

- near-by 802.11 networks (f.ex. a WLAN of a neighbour) can also
negatively influence the quality of your wireless connection to the
Time Capsule.

In both cases, using a different channel for your WiFi network and/or
avoiding concurrent Bluetooth/WiFi use may help to solve this known,
physical problem.

Hi Felix,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Not sure if this will will in anyway clarify or further the mystery but I'm not sure that its causes the internet connection to crash rather it is causing the Time Capsule to disconnect from the network and it can not be reconnected unless powered off and rebooted. The mini that is running RB is connected to the TC via ethernet.

However your mention of bluetooth issues has reminded me that after many months of trouble free use the problems have roughly coinsided with the use of a new bluetooth keyboard. That said if I don't run RB but use the keyboard I don't have a problem, I will check whether it works the other way round to see if its some kind of combination of the two running together at startup. It doesn't make much sense does it?

Thanks again for your assistance

Thanks for the info.

Regarding Bluetooth:
Bluetooth keyboards only produce very low traffic over Bluetooth
(basically only when keys are pressed), whereas f.ex. a Wii Remote
produces a constant stream of traffic and will thus have a different
effect. If you did not use any Bluetooth remotes with Remote Buddy,
the Bluetooth part of Remote Buddy isn't doing anything, though.

Regarding Time Capsule crashes, disconnects and the like:
Physical interferences through the use of a Bluetooth remote could
have been a possible cause for the interruption of a wireless
connection.
With a wired connection, however, wireless signals and Bluetooth don't
play any role, and I can absolutely exclude the possibility that the
use of Remote Buddy can in any way cause the problems you are seeing.
There's no code in Remote Buddy capable of doing any of that.

I remember having read a couple of early reports that mentioned the
Time Capsule hanging and crashing (=> just google for "Time Capsule
hang" and "Time Capsule crash" to find loads of user reports). Given
your description, you may well have gotten one of the units behaving
that way.

Since this is really a Time Capsule issue, please contact Apple for
help and a possible replacement.
