This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Hello, I'm using the Sony BD remote with Remote Buddy and Plex on my Mac Mini. It works great, except I have to replace the batteries in the BD remote about every 4 days! I have the energy saver option activated in Remote Buddy, which is supposed to de-activate the remote after 5 minutes, right? However, I've never noticed a lag or anything when I pick up the remote after it being idle overnight. I thought I'd have to re-activate the remote by pushing Enter + Start or something, but it always just works, so I am assuming that the power save mode is never activated? Any ideas on this?

These entries from the FAQ may be relevant to this topic: Hardware - Apple® Remote
To enable you to use all capabilities of the IR Receiver of your Mac®, Remote Buddy is using its own driver. In contrast, all other applications with integrated Apple® Remote support usually use the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem.
As long as you're running Remote Buddy, Remote Buddy and its driver are responsible for turning the received button presses into actions. As soon as you quit Remote Buddy, this task is again handled by the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem.
If other applications don't use the interface to the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem correctly, this can lead to the effect that nothing happens when you press a button on your Apple® Remote. For as long as you're running Remote Buddy, issues like this are covered by Remote Buddy and it's driver and are therefore not visible to you. However, as soon as you quit Remote Buddy, the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem is back in control and any issues caused in it by other applications become visible.
Therefore Remote Buddy is neither the cause of the issue nor is it responsible for it. Instead, the cause of the issue exists independently of Remote Buddy. It's located elsewhere and can also only be solved there.
Although our products can't cause any such issues, we're regularly contacted about such issues and asked for help. In order to make locating and fixing the cause of such issues as easy and efficient as possible, we've developed a free diagnostics tool: Remote Control Diagnostics. It can locate issues with a single click and will provide you with information about the issue as well as with instructions on how you can fix it.
Hardware - Sony® BD Remote Control To increase battery life for the Sony® BD Remote, you should turn on the power saving options Remote Buddy offers. You can find them at Remote Buddy Preferences > Hardware > Bluetooth Receiver.
These settings are recommended:
General
Search for paired remotes on startup: On.
Stop searching for paired remotes after max .. minutes: Off.
Display pairing instructions and status messages: Off. If you experience problems, you should turn this option back on to aid you in debugging the problem.
Energy saving
Automatically disconnect remotes after inactivity of more than .. minute(s): On, value of 1 minute.
Disconnect remotes when computer goes to sleep: On. The potential power saving with this option is huge. But as the warning says, this will not work with all computers: if you can't wake up your computer with your remote after turning this option on, please turn it off again.

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Thanks for asking. The power saving options for the BD Remote are fully functional, except when using OS X 10.5.6, whose Bluetooth subsystem changed in such a way that this can no longer be achieved. Please see the release notes for more details. Best regards, Felix Schwarz

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Ah! That explains things. Sorry I didn't read the release notes. Is there a simple way to revert to 10.5.5 or do I have to completely re-install Leopard? :-/

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Never mind, I am finding out that it's not so simple when reading Apple forums. Man do I hate it when Apple screws things up with their updates. :(

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. A small update and good news on that topic: I recently found a (clean) way to achieve the closure of the Bluetooth connection even under OS X 10.5.6. Unless any last minute problems turn up with that technique, support for the power saving options will again be part of the next release of Remote Buddy. Best regards, Felix Schwarz

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Sounds great, Felix! I decided to pair one my Wiimotes yesterday after I found out I had no more AA batteries for my Sony BD remote. Works great. The Wiimote seems to work with disabling after 5 minutes? I get a message on the screen after 5 minutes - "Saving energy, disconnected" and I have to press 1+2 togehter on the Wiimote to connect again. So does the Wiimote use some other BT-protocol to manage this, or is it the Wiimote itself that powers down after 5 minutes? Either way, I found it quite annoying to have the messages on the screen, and also disturibing to have to re-activate the Wiimote everytime it was "sleeping" by pushing 1+2 and waiting while the remote re-discovers my Mac Mini. Is this the behaviour I can expect when the Sony BD sleep works?

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. The support for the Wii Remote and the Sony BD Remote are architectually very different - as are the ways these remotes have to be addressed. That's part of why the power saving options continued to be supported for the Wii Remote without interruption. Regarding the messages: You can turn them off altogether at RB > Prefs > Bluetooth Receiver Regarding the disconnect and pairing behaviour of the BD Remote: The pairing behaviour of the BD Remote is very different from the Wii Remote. In most cases, you will not notice that the BD Remote was disconnected except for a short delay upon your first press that's caused by the BD Remote waking from sleep and re-establishing the Bluetooth connection. I personally find it to be very smooth. Best regards, Felix Schwarz

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Felix, I just updated to the latest version of RB, and found out that RB does indeed close the Bluetooth-connection to Sony BD after 5 minutes now, as indicated by a message on the screen that the remote is disconnected. However, I can not make the remote wake up again without unpairing and re-pairing it! I.e. when RB tells me that the Sony BD remote is disconnected, it is dead to me. Whatever buttons I press on the remote, nothing happens. I have to unpair and pair it again in RB to make it work again. Am I missing something? |

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. I wouldn't know what could cause this. Disconnect and pairing works fine on all Macs that I've tested it on. I generally have little to no influence on any Bluetooth-related details in OS X 10.5.6 since connect, disconnect and connection maintenance are entirely handled by OS X in that OS release. What happens if you use the OS X Bluetooth-Menu (in the titlebar of OS X) to disconnect the BD Remote? Can you see anything Bluteooth-related in Console.app's log (in "All messages" view)? Please also let me know, what your settings in Remote Buddy > Preferences > Hardware > Bluetooth Receiver are. Best regards, Felix Schwarz

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Same problem here... Q: What happens if you use the OS X Bluetooth-Menu (in the titlebar of OS X) to disconnect the BD Remote? A: Remote Buddy sais: "BD Remote Control Disconnected", when i press any button on BD remote again, everything works great (of course with little lag). Q: Can you see anything Bluteooth-related in Console.app's log (in "All messages" view)? A: no Q:Please also let me know, what your settings in Remote Buddy > Preferences > Hardware > Bluetooth Receiver are. A:http://www.grabup.com/uploads/c2bf4d2a0e9de464be651c88e37cb07d.png?direct My investigation: When RB disconnect BD remote and i press any button, in Bluetooth system-menu (OSX) is BD activeted, but not in RB. This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Thanks for the screenshots. The problem is highly likely that you enabled the option "stop searching for paired remotes after max. 3 minute(s)". That option is turned off by default. Please: 1) turn off that option again 2) quit and relaunch Remote Buddy Please let me know about your results. Thanks in advance. Best regards, Felix Schwarz
