Issue with Dock showing up in TV Full Screen
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Hello Felix !

I have an issue I don't know where to address but I can remember that it never showed up until the moment I installed RB. So I start here and hope to get help or an advice where to advance ....

Occasionally when I wake up the MACMini and
a) it starts the EyeTV Fullscreen TV at once because it went to sleep in this mode or
b) I start the FullScreen Mode from FrontRow

the dock and the apple menu show up in front of the full screen TV. I then have to move the mouse one time or take the keyboard and switch off/on the fullscreen once. (Nasty because I don't like to use mouse or keyboard)
It then never happens again when I leave TV to Frontrow and re-enter it then until the next wake-up.

And there is one other thing that definitely came with RB. No issue at all but perhaps something that has to do with the issue above. Every time I enter TV full screen from FrontRow for a short time the loundness controll of EyeTV appears in the upper left corner of the full screen and then disappears again after 2 seconds or so. No isssue but it says me that someone is telling EyeTV something that does not need to be told this moment .... (I changed the Front-Row built-in of RB for PLAY/PAUSE to the "VirtualKeyboard PLAY/PAUSE but the effect remains)

Do you have an idea ?

Thanks in advance !
Regards
Andree

Hello Andree,

Thanks for asking.

Regarding question 1:
Remote Buddy can't cause this by itself.

But I still think I know what happens. If you start EyeTV and Remote
Buddy (or any other application other than EyeTV) at login time,
chances are EyeTV first starts, goes fullscreen, hides title bar and
dock. And then the second application (here Remote Buddy) finishes
starting up and OS X makes it the active application. You should see
that second application's name on the left in the titlebar.

Since the second active application doesn't ask OS X to hide titlebar
and dock, OS X will now display them again. You should be able to get
the same effect when you put EyeTV into fullscreen mode and then use
Alt + Tab to switch to any other application currently running on your
Mac.

Possible workarounds:
1) Untested, may or may not show the respective effect: reduce Remote
Buddy to a "UIElement" and adjust the "Prefs > General" settings so
that Remote Buddy only shows as menu item, but not in the dock.

2) Remove the applications from your startup items, write an
AppleScript that starts one application after another and add that
script to your startup items. It could look like this:

-- snip --
tell application "Remote Buddy" to activate
tell application "SomeOtherApp" to activate

delay 1 -- wait one second (shouldn't be needed, just here in case you
need a delay somewhere)

tell application "EyeTV" to activate
-- snap --

Regarding question 2:
Remote Buddy will mute and unmute EyeTV when Front Row is entered/
left. EyeTV by itself will not do this.

Best regards,
Felix Schwarz

Hello Felix,

thanks for your detailed answer !

Just for clarification:
(I am no real MAC-User. Only have it for the mediacenter stuff and want to improve it with RB)

You speak of "...start EyeTV and Remote
Buddy ...at login time...." I wrote about the sleep and wake up. Is this the same ? Does OS-X execute a login and a startup after wakeup ???

And:
Can you please elaborate about "UIElement." (see above: No MAC-Freak)

Thanks a lot !

Hello Andrée,

sorry, I missed that detail.

OS X doesn't execute a login or startup after wakeup. It may, however,
change active window status (f.ex. when setting a password for wakeup-
after-sleep) and it *could*, depending on which receiver model you use
and how it supports USB power management, also look like an unplug/
replug of the USB receiver hardware to EyeTV, which would cause EyeTV
to close and reopen its TV window. None of this is related to Remote
Buddy, though.

I've tried the following:

1) bring EyeTV in fullscreen mode
2) put the Mac to sleep
3) wake it up

Result: the EyeTV window is still full-screen with no menu and dock
visible. I get the same result regardless of whether Remote Buddy is
running or not.

I'm afraid I can't reproduce what you describe. As Remote Buddy
doesn't handle which window is currently the active one (that's OS X'
task), either, I don't believe it's the cause of your observation,
either.

Best regards,
