how to best launch eyetv from harmony remote?
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Hi!

love the soft.
With RemoteBuddy I've tricked my harmony remote into transmitting 2 apple remotes to my mini, and also an eyetv remote (which naturally seems only to show up after eyetv is launched). My current plan to tie this all together and be able to watch TV is to figure out a way to launch eyetv from the harmony.

there is a plugin that allows eyetv to show up in Front Row(pietv?), but I haven't gotten it to work. I'm not sure I want to use Front Row anyway, because it wont allow me to record media, correct? (just media playback).

So IM thinking that I need to get one of my logical apple remotes to send a 'launch eyetv' applescript command to my mini.

is this sounding like the best approach? Otherwise I haven't been able to control eyetv until its already launched- then the standard eyetv remote works.

thanks for any help

Hello ChrisO

give FrontTV a try:

I use it to integrate EyeTV into FrontRow and it works like a charme.

And then use RB. Nice !

Thanks for asking.

You could, for example, launch EyeTV via a specific button. The action
you'd want to map to that button is located at "Behaviour > Activate
EyeTV Behaviour" in the mapping table popup.

You can also place that action anywhere in Remote Buddy's menu
(available under "Actions > Behaviour > Activate EyeTV Behaviour"
there).

thanks for the replies,

I'm a bit lost on a few things. First off, I'm using
10.4.x -do I need to step up to 10.5? My front row is a hobbled hack (to bring it back after apple took it away around 10.4.11) , so that is probably not so good either.

I've gotten front row to start up a few times and found it lacking - wasn't able to customize its menus at all- Im hoping remote buddy will allow me to remove 'shuffle' as the first menu item ...

Also, will I be able to hit 'record' while watching eytv live?

sorry for the wild questions- so much to learn

thanks for the replies,

I'm a bit lost on a few things. First off, I'm using
10.4.x -do I need to step up to 10.5? My front row is a hobbled hack

Please keep in mind that Remote Buddy and Front Row are two different
and completely independant things.

Remote Buddy 1.x runs on 10.4.6 and later. No update to 10.5 is needed
to run Remote Buddy. Remote Buddy's menus can be customized. Front
Row's menus can't. Apple doesn't offer you any such options.

Also, will I be able to hit 'record' while watching eytv live?

Remote Buddy has great EyeTV support. You can start and stop recording
in EyeTV via Remote Buddy just like you can when using EyeTV with a
mouse and keyboard.

I recommend you to download the free, 30 day, feature-unlimited trial
version from the Remote Buddy website. It also comes with its own Help
that includes a chapter of step-by-step How-Tos, which is a great
starting point if you want to customize it.

thanks for the reply, Felix. I have, indeed downloaded the 30 day tryout. I think, as I have been trying to explain (not so clearly) is that os 10.4.11 took away my Front Row functionality. I would like some confirmation from someone that they have also experienced this phenomenon. It's kind of moot, anyway because I am buying a copy of 10.5 regardless. I had tried to get around this by downloading a front row enabler: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19947.

To sum up , I don't think trying to stay on os 10.4.11 and use remote buddy is working . I certainly can't install the eyeTV/front row plug that is mentioned earlier in this thread(frontTV), because it wont install below 10.5.

It seems like apple was successful in getting me to purchase Leopard.

Ok so I did a little research and it seems I'm not the only one having issue with 10.4.11 and Front Row:

Seems like making the jump to 10.5 is probably the way to go. I'm just going to put this all aside until I get the new system in place.
