EyeTV and Confirmation Modal Dialogs
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Anyone else experiencing this?

Some of the modal dialogs that appear in EyeTV (such as "Delete / Do Not Delete"), cannot be accessed with the Apple Remote when using Remote Buddy.

Remote Buddy, rather than doing up/down & enter on some of those dialogs, instead pauses/unpauses the TV display behind the dialog.

EyeTV seems to handle it properly, meaning that if I shut down Remote Buddy, EyeTV handles the Apple Remote properly.

Any suggestions?

P.S. Just installed latest updates of both EyeTV (3.1.1) and Remote Buddy (3.12) which didn't help.

Thanks for asking.

Which version of EyeTV and Remote Buddy are you using?

How do you end up at the dialogs you have problems with?

Which other dialogs do you have problems with?

Just installed latest updates of both EyeTV (3.1.1) and Remote Buddy (3.12) which didn't help.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Start recording channel.
2. Try to change to another channel.

You can't select "OK.

Even worse, if you now press the Menu button, you're completely stuck...

This is a old EyeTV bug. They dont learn to test their releases. I have the same problem and x times called the eyeTV support but they donīt react. I think it makes no sense for Iospirit to fix this problem with a additional feature.

Donīt try to change the channel during a recording. Even with a dual tuner you have the same issue. Place a entry in the elgato forum.

Thanks for asking.

I have tried what you describe using Remote Buddy 1.12 and EyeTV 3.1.1
and could not reproduce this.

What you describe is known for older EyeTV releases, which didn't
offer a mechanism to detect and catch that error. Such a mechanism has
been added to EyeTV for some time now, already, though. And Remote
Buddy supports it.

Thanks Felix.

I have just confirmed that I am using EyeTV 3.1.1 and RemoteBuddy 1.12

The problem is still there, perhaps you have some other suggestions for me because its not working for me, and its quite frustrating.

Are you sure you followed the same steps as I described?

Yes, I did exactly what you described:

Steps to reproduce:
1. Start recording channel.
2. Try to change to another channel.

You can't select "OK.

Except that in my case Remote Buddy told me that a recording is
ongoing and no requester came up in the first place (and thus, there
wasn't even the need to or possibility to select OK).

What hardware are you using?

Hi Felx, I have exactly the same problem. With EyeTV 3.1.1, the problem gets even worse, as failure to confirm the "stop recording" dialog can result in two simultaneous full screen players being open at the same time, which really chokes eyeTV. Here are the steps to reproduce the problem on my machine. I also posted this to the EyeTV forums.

My setup is EyeTV version 3.1.1 build 4916, but it also happens with the prior (release) build. I'm running on a mac mini core 2 duo hooked up through MiniDisplay - DVI - HDMI big screen LCD. Source is Hauppauge HDPVR 1212. I'm running remote buddy 1.12.

1. put EyeTV in full screen mode, live TV
2. start recording the show that you're watching (full screen menu apple remote "menu", "more", "record")
3. change channels with full screen menu, apple remote ("menu" ; "channels"; go to another channel number, "select"
4. EyeTV will pop up the red alert - "Please stop the recording before changing channels"
5. Try to dismiss the alert by hitting "menu" on the apple remote.
6. Now, I always get a blue screen (full screen) with the full screen EyeTV menu (options are: recordings, channels, guide, more) on top. Remote controls are unresponsive.
7. To dismiss the blue screen, right click on your mouse to bring up the contextual menu and choose the "exit full screen" option.
8. Now, I see two EyeTV player windows. The one on top is a blue screen with the EyeTV menu (now in a regular application window). The second, behind that, is an EyeTV full screen player with the program that I'm recording playing live, and the red "Please stop the recording before changing channels" alert still on it.
9. to get out of this mess, you can use a keyboard to close the window with the blue screen and mouse to hit "OK" in the red alert. I haven't found a way to get out of it with just the remote control.

Archon you are using another eyeTV receiver. Obviously in dual tuner mode. I have the described effects only with the eyeTV diversity.

No, I only have one tuner - the Hauppauge HDPVR 1212. Strange that a one-tuner setup would get into a state with two full screen windows simultaneously.

Thanks a lot for the detailed and very specific step-by-step
description. That was exactly what I needed to reproduce the problem!

The solution, though, will not be easy. Without support from EyeTV's
side, Remote Buddy will have to go a very long way to detect whether
this dialog is currently displayed. But that support from EyeTV's side
may be coming. If not, I have added your entire post to the ToDo list,
so it is not forgotten and will be looked at again on a regular basis.

In the meantime, here's a workaround:

1) Ensure your mapping at RB Prefs > Mapping > EyeTV includes the
possibility to enter the Remote Buddy menu (which is the case with
default settings).

2) Go to Prefs > Menu > EyeTV. There, drag the menu element located at
"Actions > Virtual keyboard > Return (key)" into EyeTV's context menu.

3) The next time you experience the modal dialog problem, you can then
open Remote Buddy's menu, select the entry you just added and dismiss
the dialog.

Felix Schwarz
