multiple IR receivers
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Hello from France,

I have been testing Remote Buddy to build a Mac HTPC. RB is really great and flexible.

First setup is working great on a macbook with builin IR, an Harmony remote using plex profile to have more keys available.

I am planning to install a macmini as a mediaserver. I would not be able to use builtin IR as the mac would be in another room.

It seems remote buddy supports having mutiple IR receivers at the same time (they should appear in hardware tab).

But as I don't have a way to test it right now I would like to be sure it will be working with standard apple remote codes before buying one of the compatible receivers.

I was thinking on buying Manta TR1 but any help to choose the best recevier to use with an apple remote would be great

Regards
Patrick.

Hello Patrick,

thanks for asking.

Remote Buddy supports several IR receivers to be connected and used at
the same time.

Remote Buddy's eHome driver (which also covers the Manta TR1) supports
forwarding Apple Remote IDs as true Apple Remote Events via its
Virtual Remote. Please note, however, that only the Apple IR receiver
driver currently has a "Multiple remotes" mode. The eHome driver
currently doesn't offer this feature. Also, eHome receivers don't
support wakeup with an Apple Remote.

Another option would be to buy a Keyspan Remote for iTunes bundle. It
supports wakeup by any IR remote (which, however, can also be a
disadvantage, as sunlight can also cause a wakeup), but the decoding
of Apple Remote IDs currently isn't supported for these (and probably
never will - to me it looks like the Keyspan receivers don't have
sufficient resolution for this).

Best regards,
Felix Schwarz

Hello Felix.

Thanks for this detailed feedback on receivers. It seems there is nothing better than builtin IR.

Havving virtual remotes support and using harmony setup is important to drive applications I plan to use.

So, I think i will reconsider placing the Macmini in theater room or will use an IR repeater.

Patrick.
