Remote Buddy and MacMame cant get Virtual Keyboard to work
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Hi, ive installed MacMame and want to control it using my Wii-remote. (all my other stuff works great using remote buddy, Thanks IOSpirit for an unreal product, i love it!)

anyways, macmame doesnt recognize the inputs made from the virual keyboard (either running in the background or full screen)

is there something iam missing? or have done wrong?

Even simply having macmame run in a window, and then bringing up the virtual keyboard and manually sellecting the buttons has nil effect.

any help would be much appreciated.

kind regards
Vanne

Thanks for asking.

I don't have any experience with MacMame, so I can only make an
educated guess:

Remote Buddy is using the OS X APIs designed for use by remote desktop
software. It's possible that OS X only adds these events as normal
keyboard events, at a higher level than where events coming from real
hardware originate (the HID level). If MacMame ignores normal keyboard
events and instead listens to keyboards directly at the HID level,
this may well explain what you are seeing.

If you have a second computer that you can use to remotely access your
Mac via Screen Sharing: can you control MacMame via the other computer?

Hi Felix

I'm also running MAME OS X so I tried that here. You can't use Screen Sharing to control MAME when a game is running. I'm pretty sure it accesses the keyboard at a "lower" level as you've suggested.

In any case, MAME needs to be able to detect simutaneous multiple key presses, so its never going to work with Remote Buddy.

My advice would be to buy a wireless joystick like I've got, works great!

MacMAME is going down to the HID level then, which explains what you
see.

Multiple simultaneous actions being executed at the same time are not
currently supported for good reasons (I explained several times why in
the forum, but in essence: it will not work when f.ex. you'd be trying
to cut and paste at the same time, using Apple+C and Apple+V - the
system would only see Apple + C + V - it gets worse when other
modifiers come into play - therefore Remote Buddy takes care that such
combinations can't happen), but that doesn't mean it will never be
supported - Remote Buddy is under very active development after all ;-)
