Problem to open Plex with Harmony with Remote Buddy running
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Hello everyone.

First of all, I wanted to apologize for my English, I am spanish and I do not handling well especially with the English writing.

My problem comes from the use of:
- Plex
- Logitech Harmony 525
- Remote budy

I configured an "activity" in the Harmony for automatically open Plex (as shown in the wiki of the Harmony support) but it isn't working, the command that was supposed to open Plex really open the menu of Remote Buddy. Using the Harmony as Plex device, commands like Play, Menu, Power, ... open the menu of Remote Buddy, and not start Plex. I have Remote Buddy configured as shown here (in the blog by Felix).
Since Plex opens, all the commands in the Harmony works fine, even the Power (which closes Plex), the problem is open Plex when it is closed. On Plex I have set the remote like "Harmony remote" and "always active". PlexHelper is running (even with Plex closed).

If I close Remote Buddy everything works fine, the command sent by the Harmony opens Plex, and when I change to another activitie (see TV) the Harmony closes Plex. But I think that the use of Remote Buddy is interesting for another jobs, in fact just buy it

Does anyone know what might be the problem.

Thank you.

Thanks for asking.

This is not a bug of Remote Buddy.

The Harmony profile supplied by Plex uses just normal Apple Remote
codes. Therefore, when you press any button on your Harmony, it'll
always send a menu, play, left, right, up or down button code via IR -
and Remote Buddy will react according to what you have mapped to the
menu, play, left, right, up and down buttons.

Hello, and thank you for your answer.

I set the configuration in Remote Buddy like you explain here: http://www.iospirit.com/index.php?mode=view&obj_type=blog&obj_id=2&sid=9457856G1cb6e8a5dbfbdd3f&o_blog_dmode=view&o_blog_entry=131

Here you said that "...while Remote Buddy of course will be the first recipient of AppleŽ Remote button events while it is running, these button events can be easily passed through to any application listening for AppleŽ Remote events using Remote Buddy's Virtual Remote..."

Also here: http://www.iospirit.com/index.php?mode=view&obj_type=infogroup&obj_id=24&sid=8853848G6a7724b645b87165&o_infogroup_objcode=infogroup-23&o1_infogroup_objcode=html-120&o3_supportgroup_view=forum-11&o4_forum_dmode=view&o4_forum_submode=threaded&o4_forum_forumentry_id=13568

you said that "For button presses originating from an Apple built-in IR receiver, all actions of the virtual remote will take the ID of the
Apple Remote into account and generate Apple Remote events just like if RB wasn't running. It's totally transparent."

Then ... I think that if I pressed a button in the Harmony set like "Plex Device" the command sent by Harmony will be sent to Plex bahaviour because plexhelper is running.
If Remote Buddy is closed this works well.

Am I wrong?
The configuration only works when Plex app is running?

Regards.

Thanks for the info.

If you

a) start with the default settings and
b) follow exactly what is written in the blog,

Apple Remote codes will

1) control Remote Buddy when Plex is not running (Plex Helper isn't
relevant at this point, since it has no UI and thus can't be the
foreground application).

2) be forwarded 1:1 to the OS (and thus Plex Helper) when Plex is
running and in the foreground. What Plex / Plex Helper are making out
of the Apple Remote codes is outside of Remote Buddy's control.

Please note that

a) only when Plex (not Plex Helper!) is running, will it receive Apple
Remote codes in this configuration

b) tutorials/features/wiki articles that require Plex/Plex Helper to
be the one, only and exclusive application to have access to the IR
receiver will also only work if that is the case. Also, the
requirement of exclusive access to the IR receiver and all events
coming in from it all of the time by its very nature excludes the use
of any other application with the IR receiver. If I understand your
original posting correctly, the tutorial you were following does have
this requirement, since the only way such a thing can work is by using
a background application that requires to receive all events from the
IR receiver.

c) you can start Plex through Remote Buddy's menu.

Hello, thanks for your reply.

Finally I solved.

What I did was the following:
- I activated support for multiple remotes on RB.
- Identify the ID of the remote that sends the command (Power) to start Plex.
- I created only for this remote a "logical remote" that called "2" (I have then two "logical remote": Apple Remote and 2)
- In Mapping-Global Mapping and Mapping-Plex I assigned all the buttons of logical remote 2 to the virtual remote.
- Apple Remote already had assigned in Mapping-Plex all buttons to the virtual remote.

And ......

IT WORKS. When Plex is open, the command Power closes Plex (it worked before yet) and when Plex is closed the command Power, sent by the Harmony set as Plex Device, opens Plex and changes of activity within the Harmony easily.

Regards.
