Not working well with Hulu Desktop
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Hey there,

With the latest versions of everything (hulu and RB), I cannot properly use Hulu with Remote buddy active.

1) With RB active, the selection zooms around several items at once instead of only one.
2) If I quit RB, it all works fine.
3) So, I set all the controls in RB for the Hulu behavior to none, up/down/left/right do not function (I get a error beep).
4) I then set the hold controls to up/down/left/right, and this works (one item at a time) but is not a workable solution.

This is all with a Logitech Harmony remote. AJAX remote works fine (settings are current at "none' for push, up/down/etc. for hold)

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Thanks for the bugreport.

I could reproduce the problem with the latest Hulu Desktop version and
a fix is included with the next release of Remote Buddy.

Should this be fixed in 1.14.1? I'm having the same issue here - but it might be related to Snow Leopard. Also using a Harmony remote. The problem doesn't occur with the Wiimote.

This issue has been fixed before 1.14.1.

If you are having this issue with the Harmony Remote, but not with the
Wii Remote, it's highly likely that your Harmony Remote didn't pick up
the Apple Remote correctly during training and is sending multiple
button press/release sequences for a single button press. Have you
tried with a real Apple Remote for comparison?

I didn't actually train the Harmony myself, I'm using the Plex device from the Logitech database. Also, Hulu Desktop is the only application that is doubling keypresses - I'm not getting this behavior anywhere else. But I'll try to find my Apple Remote and see if it still happens.

Please try the Apple Remote Devices from the Logitech Database. Last
time I checked, these were results of correct trainings.

Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle. I found my original Apple remote, and it controls Hulu perfectly. So obviously there's something not quite accurate about the remote codes for Plex in Logitech's database.

Here's something else kinda weird... I changed the mapping in Remote Buddy to execute cursor commands with the virtual keyboard instead of using the Hulu Desktop navigation actions, and it no longer doubled the keystrokes. So it seems to be the combination of slightly inaccurate remote codes and the Hulu navigation actions themselves that causes the issue.

Hope that helps if you decide to try to fix it, but don't worry too much about it because I think the workaround of using the cursor controls will be fine for my needs. It's certainly a better option than trying to retrain the Harmony.

Thanks for the info.

This really is a black and white issue, though. The IR code learning
either was successful and start, repeat and end codes are sent
correctly and only once for one button press - or - the sequence of
start-repeat-end is sent again and again by your universal remote what
really is a single button press.

Since repetitions of start-repeat-end sequences could also come from
multiple *real* button presses, trying to ignore them would break
support for long presses of correctly functioning, original Apple
Remotes in favor of fixing a single universal remote profile that
seems to not send codes the way it should. That of course is something
I won't do.

I can understand that, but right now every action in Remote Buddy *does* work right with the bad codes, with the single exception of the actions in the Hulu Desktop behavior. The bad codes also work right with all the Apple apps and with Plex when RB is not running, with no duplicate presses being registered.

The "Navigation Up" action in Hulu Desktop must be doing something differently than the virtual keyboard "cursor up" action that causes the former to repeat and the latter not to repeat. Is it just passing the remote codes through to Hulu Desktop, perhaps? Maybe I should try Hulu Desktop without RB running and see if it duplicates the presses.

The dilemma is this:

Status Quo:
- the Hulu Desktop Behaviour works well with all supported remotes out
of the box
- the Hulu Desktop Behaviour acts differently with the particular
Harmony profile you mentioned because the profile seems to be
partially incorrectly programmed

If I'd make changes to work around the incorrectly programmed Harmony
Profile, the result would be:
- the Hulu Desktop Behaviour will no longer work well with any of the
supported remotes - especially support for long presses would no
longer work for them
- the single seemingly incorrectly programmed Harmony Profile works

I'll keep things at the Status Quo because it is behaving correctly
with all officially supported hardware. I strongly believe that what
appears to be a broken Universal Remote profile should be fixed at the
origin - in the Universal Remote, not in Remote Buddy. Thanks for your
understanding.
