unwanted wake up with multiple remote controls
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Hello,

Here is my problem.

I have a Mac mini, running Remote Buddy.
In RB hardware conf., I use the "support for multiple remote control" feature to map logical remotes (for using plex with an Harmony Remote).
Also, "Automatically authorize newly found remotes to control ..." is disabled.

All this stuff works fine.

I have also an iMac and a Macbook with their remotes, all of them having a different ID than the harmony one on the mini.

The problem is that while the mini is sleeping, any button pressed on the iMac or Macbook remotes, the Mac Mini is waking up.

This behavior does not happen when "support for multiple remote control" feature is disable or when Remote buddy is not used ...

Any hints ?
Thanks,
Emeric.

Thanks for asking.

The Apple IR Receiver can only be paired with one remote ID. This is a
hardware limitation. This gives us two scenarios:

A) The Apple IR Receiver is paired in hardware to one Apple Remote ID.
=> It will only let through signals from that remote and will only
wake upon a press of that remote.
=> Only one remote can be used.
=> Remote Buddy can only see signals coming from that one Apple
Remote. In this mode, it can support only a single Apple Remote.

B) The Apple IR Receiver is not paired in hardware to a single Apple
Remote ID.
=> It lets through all Apple Remote signals. It will wake up to all
Apple Remotes.
=> Several Apple Remotes can be used.
=> Remote Buddy sees all Apple Remote signals and filters out those
that are unwanted. In this mode, it can support multiple Apple Remotes.

In essence, switching support for multiple remote controls on and off
switches between scenario A) and B). And, being a good citizen, Remote
Buddy takes care of any existing system pairing options (to a single
remote, as seen at System Preferences > Security) to take effect when
you quit it.

I hope that helps in explaining your observations. Since what you
observe is strictly a hardware limitation, there's sadly nothing
Remote Buddy could do to change anything about it.

Best regards,
Felix Schwarz
