User 17.10.2011 12:49:40 | After 10.7.2 no apple remote on XBMC or plex
This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. I've updated lion to 10.7.2 and after this my apple remote doesn't work on XBMC. I have remote buddy and when i press the menu button i can choose, using the apple remote, a program to run... but if i run xbmc (or plex) i can't do anything... i tried running eyetv and the remote works perfectly... how can fix this issue? I tried unistalling candelair, trying without candelair, then reistalling candelair.... but no chance... Thanks for the help

- Please make sure you have the latest version of Remote Buddy installed. If in doubt, download the latest version, quit Remote Buddy, delete it, empty your trash, then copy the downloaded version of Remote Buddy to your harddrive and start it from there.
- Please make sure, that you have installed the latest version of the Remote Buddy drivers. You can install the drivers using the Setup Wizard (=> access it via the Remote Buddy pulldown menu).
- Check your Remote Buddy settings in the Hardware category. Your remote control should be listed there and the lamp next to it should be green. If you don't find your remote control there, either the Remote Buddy drivers were not installed or installed in an outdated version - or - there is a general problem with the device. For USB devices, plugging the device to another port or resetting the PMU and/or SMC-unit of your Mac® (=> find guides on how to do this for your Mac® in the support area of apple.com) may help. If you can't find it under "USB" in the System Profiler (=> /Applications/Utilities) either, a hardware defect is as well possible.
- Check the batteries of your remote control.
- If your remote control has an on/off switch: make sure that your remote control is switched on.
- If your remote control requires additional receiver hardware: make sure that it is correctly attached to your computer and that it turns up in System Profiler.
- If you use an Apple® Remote, you should also check your system settings. Quit Remote Buddy, then open System Preferences.app > Security. Please make sure that the option to disable the infrared receiver is NOT active and click on "Unpair" should you have paired your Apple® Remote with your Mac®. After that, start Remote Buddy. If your Apple® Remote still doesn't work with Remote Buddy, please also check its preferences for the Apple® Remote. They can be found at Preferences > Hardware > Built-in IR receiver. If support for multiple remote controls is enabled there, ensure that your remote control is checked in the right table (=> you can find the correct entry for your remote control by pressing a button on it).
- If you are using a Keyspan™ RF Remote for Front Row, re-pair its remote control and receiver by simultaneously pressing the small knob on the back of the remote control and the knob on the receiver stick (the knob looks like the blinking LED, except it does not blink).
Hardware - Apple® Remote
To enable you to use all capabilities of the IR Receiver of your Mac®, Remote Buddy is using its own driver. In contrast, all other applications with integrated Apple® Remote support usually use the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem.
As long as you're running Remote Buddy, Remote Buddy and its driver are responsible for turning the received button presses into actions. As soon as you quit Remote Buddy, this task is again handled by the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem.
If other applications don't use the interface to the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem correctly, this can lead to the effect that nothing happens when you press a button on your Apple® Remote. For as long as you're running Remote Buddy, issues like this are covered by Remote Buddy and it's driver and are therefore not visible to you. However, as soon as you quit Remote Buddy, the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem is back in control and any issues caused in it by other applications become visible.
Therefore Remote Buddy is neither the cause of the issue nor is it responsible for it. Instead, the cause of the issue exists independently of Remote Buddy. It's located elsewhere and can also only be solved there.
Although our products can't cause any such issues, we're regularly contacted about such issues and asked for help. In order to make locating and fixing the cause of such issues as easy and efficient as possible, we've developed a free diagnostics tool: Remote Control Diagnostics. It can locate issues with a single click and will provide you with information about the issue as well as with instructions on how you can fix it.
Please update your copy of Remote Buddy to version 1.15 or later.
Hardware - EyeTV Receiver
The latest info on hard- and software-requirements including info on support hardware can be found on the dedicated page for EyeTV receivers.
Please consider making use of the free Remote Buddy trial version to test your device for compatibility directly on your computer.

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Thanks for asking. Both Remote Buddy as well as XBMC's/Plex' own Apple Remote helper communicate with XBMC/Plex via UDP network packets. If XBMC/Plex doesn't react to your button presses, please check your firewall settings and any firewall software (like, f.ex. Little Snitch) that you have installed for settings that could prevent XBMC/Plex from accepting incoming UDP packets. Best regards, Felix Schwarz

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Thanks for the reply, but i tried to disable little snitch and nothing changed... anyway the only thing that is changed in the last week is the update to lion 10.7.2, before that my apple remote was perfectly functioning... | User 18.10.2011 13:30:50 | Re: After 10.7.2 no apple remote on XBMC or plex

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. I can use Remote Buddy 1.18.2 (latest version, default settings, using the included Plex Behaviour), Plex 0.9.3.4 (latest version, default settings), OS X 10.7.2 (latest version) and the Apple Remote without any issues. I'm not using Little Snitch. Since nobody else has brought any such issue to my attention either, I'm afraid there's nothing for me to fix. As I mentioned before, Remote Buddy sends UDP packets to control Plex and XBMC. If these UDP packets are blocked, control no longer works. Since Little Snitch is pretty much the only software I can think of blocking local UDP traffic on OS X - and you have it installed (and you're experiencing this issue) - and I (who doesn't have Little Snitch installed) do not experience the issue, I think it's highly likely that Little Snitch and/or your individual Little Snitch configuration is the cause of your issue. Since I can't provide support for Little Snitch and also have never used it personally, the only advice I could give you is to back up your LS settings, then completely remove LS - and reboot. Given the info you've provided me with, this should solve your issue. For individual support for LS - including debugging its configuration, please turn to the company making it - Objective Development. Best regards, Felix Schwarz

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Ok, il try unistalling Littlesnitch and i'll make you know if it works, but: 1) Remotebuddy uses udp packet only for plex and xbmc? Because with eyetv it works... 2) My configuration of LS is the same of 1 week ago... the only thing changed meanwhile is the version of lion... I ask this because i'd like not to make a useless uninstallation of LS. Thanks anyway for the help, i understand that is hard to diagnostic an issue that only i have... but is a strange issue... I'll update this post after my test

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. 1) Remotebuddy uses udp packet only for plex and xbmc? Because with eyetv it works… Yes, UDP is only used with XBMC and XBMC forks like Plex and Boxee, because - these, being cross-platform ports - use UDP as their means of communication. EyeTV is controlled via emulated keystrokes, AppleScript and other OS X IPC mechanisms.

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Nothing? Could be that exists a way to debug remote buddy and to find what is blocking it? As i said i unistalled little snitch and i have not any other firewall activated... how is it possible? | User 05.03.2012 23:20:25 | Re: After 10.7.2 no apple remote on XBMC or plex
This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Hi. I was testing the demo version of remote buddy ajax remote (iPhone) and found the same problem. XBMC doesn´t work while other software does. I tryed wii mote with the same result, everything worked but XBMC.. until I found a setup option in system "allow other software to control XBMC" and voila!! everything works flawlessly. Hope this helps ;-) (PD: this is my first post, i´ve just register to contribute, i don´t know if you have allready found that option)
