Itunes always starts when I first use the remote
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Been living with this for a while now and reinstalled the mac mini to try and solve it, but the same thing happens.
The mac will be showing my screen saver and when I first click the remote, play or menu, it starts a random track in itunes.
You can, after a moment or two, navigate with Remote Buddy to itunes to stop the track, then navigate back to whatever you want to be in, but it's very irritating.
Mostly, we'll be in Plex, with the plex screen up from last time we'd used it, first click will then start a song.

Any ideas on addressing this?

Bump.

Really? No one else having a 'wake from sleep, itunes jumps in front of remote buddy' issue?
And the suggested topic is how to use the menu - not relevant at all!

Do you have Remote Buddy's driver (Candelair) installed?
(if you're unsure, you can check in Remote Buddy's Setup Wizard)

Yes, it's installed, I double checked.

Bit of background;

OS X 10.8.5 (I'm not moving, can't stand Itunes 12)
Itunes 11.4
Candelair 1.2.4
Remote Buddy 1.26.2

I formatted and reinstalled the whole mac at one point, it was annoying everyone so much.

So, help?

Do you have VLC installed?

I had issues before where that would hijack the IR command and then "Control external music players"

It is in the interface section of VLC's preferences. It also has other options regarding Apple Remote that might benefit from being turned off.

Other potential problems could be with a stray mapping in Remote Buddy. But given you have reinstalled your whole Mac you have probably already looked into that.

Try the VLC thing, if that is not the issue then maybe test it with the Ajax remote to see if it is IR related.

I've taken VLC out of the equation. Removed it with appcleaner. Same thing.

With the AJAX remote, it won't connect. No idea why.
Updated to newest version - same thing.

Hmm, that might suggest that the problem is not Remote Buddy itself

In iTunes > Preferences > Devices

Down the bottom, is there anything that suggests that iTunes is pair with any remotes?

If so, forget them.

Try uninstalling Candleair, and disabling the remote in Plex.

Then quit and restart Plex (maybe the mac).

Test to make sure nothing is happening

Enable the remote again in Plex.

Test

Then maybe try installing Candleair again.

I remember Plex had issues when I used to use it where I had to forget and add the remote to get it to work.

Out of interest, if you do not have Plex open and up press keys on the remote, does that also start iTunes?

Sorry to be so vague, but that's the art of problem solving :)

And there are other media apps that start and stop itunes (mplayerx) that you might want to check, but if they are not running then they shouldn't interfere.

Good luck

"Hmm, that might suggest that the problem is not Remote Buddy itself"

Well - I've now installed to my other mac mini. It's doing it there too. So, as this is a different machine, with a different remote - I'm not sure of the common thread.
The other mac mini has a fresh install. Only thing I've installed is Plex and remote buddy, to test.
Same thing, Itunes kicks up first.

"In iTunes > Preferences > Devices

Nothing. On either.

"Try uninstalling Candleair, and disabling the remote in Plex

OK, did this on the original, using appzapper to remove Candleair.

"Test to make sure nothing is happening

Yup, still does it on both machines.

"I remember Plex had issues when I used to use it where I had to forget and add the remote to get it to work.

No. It's only when it's gone into screensaver. it makes no odds I've shut down plex or not.
I've tried disabling sleep, but it seems in that case, it still does it after a while.
It's like Remote Buddy can't get there in time. Once you've quit Itunes, it all works fine.

"And there are other media apps that start and stop itunes (mplayerx) that you might want to check, but if they are not running then they shouldn't interfere."

There's nothign on the 'old' mac mini I installed for testing. The new one doesn't have much, Streamtome, servetome, it did have VLC then I uninstalled, that's about it.

Hmmm.

In iTunes > Preferences > Advanced

Is there a check next to:

Share iTunes Library XML with other applications

If not, try adding a check.

and i guess if there is, try removing it

Reboot and test again.

I remember you said you are using an old version of OS X because you didn't like the interface with the newer versions of iTunes.

Could you (to rule things out) try installing the newer version on one of your test machines?
