Using Remote Buddy with Quicksilver
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
I like your application but I cant use it with Front Row and Quicksilver. When I try to activate Front Row, Quicksilver activates instead because I guess your using some applescript which is using Quicksilvers key combo for the current selection.

Any chance of a fix without ruining my quicksilver habbit

Also whilst I am here, as you have some applescript in your app how about a small dirty hack which will make skipping in VLC possible?

Hello John,

thanks for your feedback!

activates instead because I guess your using some applescript which
is using Quicksilvers key combo for the current selection.

You haven't set this to "Apple + Esc" by any chance? Since this is
the key combo used to activate Front Row (and also the only possible
way to do this afaik), I can't change that key combo.

Any chance of a fix without ruining my quicksilver habbit

I'm under high time pressure atm but will definately have a look at
Quicksilver as soon as possible afterwards - also to exclude the
possibility of any problems with it :-)

Also whilst I am here, as you have some applescript in your app how
about a small dirty hack which will make skipping in VLC possible?

That's underway ;-)

Yes and No. :) Yes I have set a shortcut for Apple + Esc but it replaces Quicksilvers default action which is bound to Apple + Esc

To confirm this, check the Quicksilver manual http://docs.blacktree.com/quicksilver/command_key_reference

Now I know this is a conflict, and I get your answer and if there is no way around it then I guess something has to give my end. However how does the Apple remote invoke Front Row? I would guess you could reverse engineer that process...

I totaly understand and thanks

Yay :)

Hello John,

sorry for the late reply.

However how does the Apple remote invoke Front Row? I would guess
you could reverse engineer that process...

Front Row receives the Apple Remote button events seperately from the
keystrokes. So the keystrokes are really just an addition to remote
control access and not the way, the Apple Remote is invoking Front Row.

It's not possible for Remote Buddy to send Apple Remote button events
itself as far as I can see.

Also whilst I am here, as you have some applescript in your app how
about a small dirty hack which will make skipping in VLC possible?

That's underway ;-)

Yay :)

This feature arrived in preview 2 but you may still want to have a
look at preview 3 as well ;-)

I think you missunderstood what I meant. I understand exactly what your saying, in fact its very similar to what I said.

What I meant to convey was, if there is a peice of Apples own software running that listens for the remote control and starts front row, without simply invoking the keyboard shortcut, then somewhere there is a hook in the system or the frontrow application to programitcally start front row. Maybe you could reverse engineer that code.

That was what I was saying. Apple somehow does it so its there somewhere...

Will do

Hello John,

I'm looking at it, but so far I haven't found that mechanism. Some
interesting sidenodes, though:

- Apple's rcd.app seems to widely use AppleScript to communicate with
the apps supported by default

- Front Row uses Core Image and OpenGL a lot internally.

- Front Row uses AppleScript to communicate with iTunes and probably
other applications

- Front Row does not seem to be truely extendable by third parties at
this stage, since it seems to contain everything that makes it up in
one binary, not in seperate Cocoa bundles or the like.

I'll keep an eye on the topic nonetheless.
