This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. First of all, this application is fantastic. It is certainly heading in the right direction. I use my Mac Mini as a Media Center in my living room. I store all of my DVDs on an external 1TB disk array in VIDEO_TS folders. I honestly just wish FrontRow would support VIDEO_TS folders, since VLC's interface plain sucks, and of course, I want to be able to do it all from the remote. If I can do the following at some point with VLC using RemoteBuddy, I'll be one happy camper: * Browse my movies from RemoteBuddy's window (like the Recent Documents item, but for a particular directory I choose). * Configure the buttons like so: Plus: Cycle subtitle track Minus: Cycle audio track Next: Next chapter Prev: Previous chapter Pause/Play: Pause/play movie and send Indigo action to toggle lighting Basically, ultimately I want to be able to select a movie, press one button and presto -- movie starts and lights go down. Pause the movie, and lights go back up. I'm at work and not at the computer, so if it can be configured to do all this already, then yay. If not, please consider some way to allow me to configure it like this :-) Thanks for the wonderful product! | These entries from the FAQ may be relevant to this topic: Hardware - Apple® Remote
To enable you to use all capabilities of the IR Receiver of your Mac®, Remote Buddy is using its own driver. In contrast, all other applications with integrated Apple® Remote support usually use the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem.
As long as you're running Remote Buddy, Remote Buddy and its driver are responsible for turning the received button presses into actions. As soon as you quit Remote Buddy, this task is again handled by the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem.
If other applications don't use the interface to the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem correctly, this can lead to the effect that nothing happens when you press a button on your Apple® Remote. For as long as you're running Remote Buddy, issues like this are covered by Remote Buddy and it's driver and are therefore not visible to you. However, as soon as you quit Remote Buddy, the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem is back in control and any issues caused in it by other applications become visible.
Therefore Remote Buddy is neither the cause of the issue nor is it responsible for it. Instead, the cause of the issue exists independently of Remote Buddy. It's located elsewhere and can also only be solved there.
Although our products can't cause any such issues, we're regularly contacted about such issues and asked for help. In order to make locating and fixing the cause of such issues as easy and efficient as possible, we've developed a free diagnostics tool: Remote Control Diagnostics. It can locate issues with a single click and will provide you with information about the issue as well as with instructions on how you can fix it.

The problem with Indigo is, though, that neither my home nor my bureau has any home automation devices that I could test it with :-) Best regards, Felix

In fact, Indigo is fully scriptable, and VLC has hotkeys for all the things I want. I did successfully make behaviors for everything (which is so, so great), but.. I ended up accidentally adding a bunch of new groups to the top-level menu trying to get my new VLC behavior into the Audio & Video group. Is there a way to delete menu groups (addresses, I think you call them)? In fact, I'd love to be able to delete the default menu groups, too, since the only one I really need is VLC and a group for Indigo. Thanks!

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Hello Jonathan, great to hear the news on Indigo! If you want to add a behaviour to the Audio & Video group, you should use "top.multimedia" as address in your constructed behaviour. Unless you have old versions lying around in Remote Buddy's Application Support directory , that should also make any of the new groups you created disappear. If you don't need certain behaviours, you can switch them off in the preferences (uncheck the checkbox in front of them). If you switch off all behaviours of a group, the respective group disappears from the menu. Better customizability of the menus will be achieved as they become configurable in general. Best regards, Felix

Unless you have old versions lying around in Remote Buddy's Application Support directory , that should also make any of the new groups you created disappear. Strange, it didn't do this the first few tries. Then magically (after leaving it for 10 minutes or so), it did in fact prune the menus. If you don't need certain behaviours, you can switch them off in the preferences (uncheck the checkbox in front of them). If you switch off all behaviours of a group, the respective group disappears from the menu. Ah, I see. The only problem is that I'd like to keep some behaviors (well, one, namely the Virtual Keyboard) but remove the top-level menu. It's kind of silly to have a menu group for one item; however,... Better customizability of the menus will be achieved as they become configurable in general. ...I'm guessing you'll get around to letting us do just that ;-) In any case, I am very pleased now. I have it dim my lights whenever VLC is launched and bring them back up when it quits. Plus, controlling VLC with the remote is a much more comfortable experience than going for the keyboard. Only thing I need now is the ability to browse my VIDEO_TS folders and launch them from within Remote Buddy's menus -- can't wait for Preview 7! -j

Strange, it didn't do this the first few tries. Then magically (after leaving it for 10 minutes or so), it did in fact prune the menus. Remote Buddy has no timer to rebuild the menus. It does this only on startup. What it has, though, is the ability to relaunch itself after the installation of an updated behaviour. So that might just have been what happened here. Ah, I see.
