- Please make sure you have the latest version of Remote Buddy installed. If in doubt, download the latest version, quit Remote Buddy, delete it, empty your trash, then copy the downloaded version of Remote Buddy to your harddrive and start it from there.
- Please make sure, that you have installed the latest version of the Remote Buddy drivers. You can install the drivers using the Setup Wizard (=> access it via the Remote Buddy pulldown menu).
- Check your Remote Buddy settings in the Hardware category. Your remote control should be listed there and the lamp next to it should be green. If you don't find your remote control there, either the Remote Buddy drivers were not installed or installed in an outdated version - or - there is a general problem with the device. For USB devices, plugging the device to another port or resetting the PMU and/or SMC-unit of your Mac® (=> find guides on how to do this for your Mac® in the support area of apple.com) may help. If you can't find it under "USB" in the System Profiler (=> /Applications/Utilities) either, a hardware defect is as well possible.
- Check the batteries of your remote control.
- If your remote control has an on/off switch: make sure that your remote control is switched on.
- If your remote control requires additional receiver hardware: make sure that it is correctly attached to your computer and that it turns up in System Profiler.
- If you use an Apple® Remote, you should also check your system settings. Quit Remote Buddy, then open System Preferences.app > Security. Please make sure that the option to disable the infrared receiver is NOT active and click on "Unpair" should you have paired your Apple® Remote with your Mac®. After that, start Remote Buddy. If your Apple® Remote still doesn't work with Remote Buddy, please also check its preferences for the Apple® Remote. They can be found at Preferences > Hardware > Built-in IR receiver. If support for multiple remote controls is enabled there, ensure that your remote control is checked in the right table (=> you can find the correct entry for your remote control by pressing a button on it).
- If you are using a Keyspan™ RF Remote for Front Row, re-pair its remote control and receiver by simultaneously pressing the small knob on the back of the remote control and the knob on the receiver stick (the knob looks like the blinking LED, except it does not blink).
Hardware - Apple® Remote
To enable you to use all capabilities of the IR Receiver of your Mac®, Remote Buddy is using its own driver. In contrast, all other applications with integrated Apple® Remote support usually use the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem.
As long as you're running Remote Buddy, Remote Buddy and its driver are responsible for turning the received button presses into actions. As soon as you quit Remote Buddy, this task is again handled by the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem.
If other applications don't use the interface to the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem correctly, this can lead to the effect that nothing happens when you press a button on your Apple® Remote. For as long as you're running Remote Buddy, issues like this are covered by Remote Buddy and it's driver and are therefore not visible to you. However, as soon as you quit Remote Buddy, the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem is back in control and any issues caused in it by other applications become visible.
Therefore Remote Buddy is neither the cause of the issue nor is it responsible for it. Instead, the cause of the issue exists independently of Remote Buddy. It's located elsewhere and can also only be solved there.
Although our products can't cause any such issues, we're regularly contacted about such issues and asked for help. In order to make locating and fixing the cause of such issues as easy and efficient as possible, we've developed a free diagnostics tool: Remote Control Diagnostics. It can locate issues with a single click and will provide you with information about the issue as well as with instructions on how you can fix it.

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Hello Lem, thanks for your post, but I'll need more details to get a picture of what is going wrong. What do you mean by .. 'becomes "not responding"'? Which apps are running? What do you see when you press the Menu button? Are you sure the Apple Remote is activated (=> green light in front of the entry in Remote Buddy's menu)? Does the remote control work with Front Row? Best regards, Felix P.S.: My apologies to everybody else for being behind schedule with answering forum posts and emails. I'll catch up with all of you next week. I have a brand new mac mini and the remote buddy doesn't work for me at all. It simply becomes "not responding" any time i press a button on the remote. All default settings.

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. What do you mean by .. 'becomes "not responding"'? I have to force quit it via task manager. Brand new mac mini, clean OS. What do you see when you press the Menu button? Nothing visually happens. Are you sure the Apple Remote is activated (=> green light in front of the entry in Remote Buddy's menu)? I see green light when it first starts up. Does the remote control work with Front Row? Yes, remote is fully functional with Front Row and VLC via addin application. If there's a log file that application creates, I would be happy to send that. | User 12.09.2006 02:04:06 | Re: Re: doesn't work at all | |
This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. What do you mean by .. 'becomes "not responding"'? I have to force quit it via task manager. Is it showing a "not responding" and the name of Remote Buddy in red in the Activity Monitor? Instead of force quitting it, could you press the "Analyze" button and send me the output? That'll allow me to see where the app is stuck. Brand new mac mini, clean OS. Ok. What do you see when you press the Menu button? Nothing visually happens. Are you sure you have clicked away the "buy or try" dialog? Especially at startup, it can easily get covered by other windows and does not turn up in Exposé, because Remote Buddy is an "NSUIElement" by default. It automatically chooses "Try" for you after 30 seconds and disappears, btw. Are you sure the Apple Remote is activated (=> green light in front of the entry in Remote Buddy's menu)? I see green light when it first starts up. Just to be sure, if you start Remote Buddy now, what are you seeing? Does the remote control work with Front Row? Yes, remote is fully functional with Front Row and VLC via addin application. If there's a log file that application creates, I would be happy to send that. There's no log file at the moment. But the analyze output of Activity Monitor I mention above would be very helpful. Best regards, Felix

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. I've searched the "Remote Buddy Forum" and found a thread with similar (same?) issue I have had, but can't reply to it because I just signed up. The reason for the "reply" is because there was no solution in that thread. Hardware setup: * I have a Mac mini (1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 with no built-in IR). * I have the Keyspan Express Remote * Receiver: UIA-11F (says on bottom) * Remote: URM-17A * http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/urm17a/homepage.spml Problem: I run Remote Buddy and first thing is the Buy/Try dialog, of which I click the "Try" button. Then, after a second or two, it shows "Hotkey Remote activated" in a semi-transparent rounded box just above the Dock. This is followed by a white box covering up almost half of the screen (on my 800x600 setup) centered horizontally and vertically and sits on-top of any new windows. Nothing else happens. The icon that is supposed to appear in the top menu never appears, and I have to open Activity Monitor in order to quit it (yes, it says "Not Responding" next to Remote Buddy). Solution: After much trial an error the thing that finally worked was: 1. Launch the KeyspanDMR application. 2. Unplug the remote receiver. 3. In the top menu-bar, select Settings, and then Un-install. Despite what it says about deleting preferences, it did not actually do this in my setup. But, just in case, you can make a backup/archive of your customized maps (stored in ~/Library/Preferences/Keyspan DMR Preferences). 4. After the uninstall, you can run Remote Buddy and it should work. The idea here is you are going to stop using the Keyspan software (drivers/kernel extensions, etc.) and start using Remote Buddy. I had some pretty nice custom maps in the Keyspan setup, but the ability to use multiple remotes AND the much better interface makes using Remote Buddy the obvious choice. I actually started looking for Front Row- ish software first, but they all rely on QuickTime, making them useless for reliable playback which VLC has already mastered. Best, Anthony

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Thank you Anthony for sharing this! I've no idea what that white window could be about other than a "Do you want to uninstall the Keyspan drivers?" dialog or from the Keyspan uninstaller itself. Thanks a lot for supplying a step by step solution for those affected! I've moved your posting into the thread you refer to, so it's easier to find and put in context for those searching for it. Best regards, Felix

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. I too am experiencing the "application not responding" problem, and it brings my PowerMac to a slow crawl. Activity Monitor tells me that RB is using > 60% CPU cycles, and periodically the RB line turns red and says it's not responding. Similarly, hovering my mouse over the RB menu item reveals a spinning beach ball. Force-quitting RB returns my computer to full speed. I think it's a conflict with ElGato's EyeTV because quitting EyeTV resolves the CPU issue within RB. Restarting EyeTV and watching a recorded (not live) program causes RB to be a CPU-hog again. Important specs for my setup: PowerMac G5 Dual 2 GHz 2 GB RAM Mac OS 10.4.9 EyeTV v2.4 (happened with older versions too) RemoteBuddy 1.0 preview 14 (happened with older versions too) Last edited: 24.04.2007 04:29:14

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Hello Scott, thanks for the info. Is this with RC2 or an earlier release? Could you sample Remote Buddy when you see the spinning beachball? (Open Activity Monitor, select Remote Buddy, choose "Analyze" from the menu, copy and paste the output either here or in a mail to info@this domain) Is there anything specific you have to do in order for this to happen? Or could you give me a set of step by step instructions on how you can reproduce the problem? Thanks in advance! Best regards, Felix

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. I'm using RC2, version 1.0, preview 14. When I reboot, RB works well & doesn't over-utilize the CPU. Unfortunately, when EyeTV begins recording or playing a recording, RB's CPU utilization climbs into the 60% range. It sticks that way until I quit EyeTV or force-quit RB. I've sent the Activity Monitor "inspect" output to you in an email. Thanks for helping me with this...

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Hello Scott, thanks for your mail. Having a look at the log, it looks like this is a problem with AppleScript not returning. It seems to loop forever trying to find EyeTV. Have you given EyeTV a different name on your computer by any chance? Best regards, Felix

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Dang, you're good. Renaming "EyeTV v2.4" back to simply "EyeTV" fixed my issue. I didn't know that renaming apps was a "no-no". Thanks for helping me resolve this!

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. After coming home from work today, I noticed that RB was running at ~40% CPU & occasionally would not respond. (Of course, I've stuck with the correct name of EyeTV to avoid trouble.) RB is using 133 MB real memory & 2.6 GB of virtual memory. Yes, that's gigabytes. Any other thoughts on why I'm experiencing the slowdown? Thanks. ps. A separate issue: the RB icon appears in my dock despite me telling it not to in the preferences. Weird.

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. After restarting my Mac, I haven't seen this behavior (swollen virtual memory use) again. Maybe it was just a fluke. Currently, RB is using ~8% CPU, 15.5 MB real memory, and 233.5 MB virtual memory.

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Hello Scott, thanks for letting me know. If you observe such resource hunger again, I'd be very interested in what actions you have performed with Remote Buddy last, so I get an idea of what could be causing this on your system. Regarding the menu/dock issue: the latest release fixes this. Best regards, Felix

If you observe such resource hunger again, I'd be very interested in what actions you have performed with Remote Buddy last, so I get an idea of what could be causing this on your system. When I returned from work today, RB was vacillating between CPU usage of 10% and 30%. Real Memory is 42 MB and Virtual Memory is 265 MB. The CPU usage seems high, but it isn't interfering with my Mac's usage & I never see spinning rainbow wheels.
Regarding the menu/dock issue: the latest release fixes this. Thanks! It sure did. Last edited: 27.04.2007 04:25:23

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Hello Scott, thanks for the update. Remote Buddy should be at 0% unless you actually use it or you just switched to another application. Whenever you experience something like this, can you please make a sample with Activity Monitor as previously mentioned, so I have a chance to see what causes this for you and have a take on solving the issue? Thanks in advance! Best regards, Felix
