Apple Remote Question
View

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information.
Why is there no function in the apple remote menu for "Menu" button? The only thing I see is "Menu (held)". I think this is a huge thing that is missing. Am I missing something? If not is it a functionality that can be added?

BTW, GREAT PRODUCT!!!

Thank you

Hello Larry,

thanks for your question.

The Menu button is "hard-wired" to showing and hiding the Remote
Buddy menu. That's the only way to ensure a user can never get lost:
all a user has to do is press the Menu button and the Remote Buddy
menu appears - usually with a diagram showing the current mapping for
orientation. From there, the user can go everywhere.

If the button for switching back to the Remote Buddy menu was freely
configurable, a lot of the ease of use would be easily lost. You'd
have to remember (or even worse: try out and possibly trigger
unwanted actions) which button brings you back home into the main menu.

That's why the "Menu" entry internally exists (hard-wired to showing
and hiding the RB menu) but is filtered out in the configuration
dialogs.

Best regards,
Felix

That's great and I would agree.

Then here is the problem that I am having. Maybe you can help me solve it or come up with a solution.

In order to play a video_ts folders through front row, I have a script that can be found here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8284571 called DVD Assist. How it works is by looking for frontrow to start playing a movie clip that is in a video_ts folder, it then opens the folder using dvd player. For some reason or another remote buddy is not seeing the switch over to dvd player and it get's stuck in some inbetween state. At that point if I press "menu" it makes the dvd player controls visible (little brushed medal gizmo) and that is all. I have to press and hold the menu button to bring up the remote buddy dialog box. In the dialog box it says it is still in front row. Let me know if that is clear.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Larry,

thanks for pointing me to that software - I've never heard of it before.

You can solve the problem by, when playing a VIDEO_TS folder via DVD
Player / DVD Assist, keeping the menu button pressed, enter the menu
and activate the DVD Player behaviour. To then return to Front Row,
press the menu button and deactivate the DVD Player behaviour.

Considering DVD Assist is a hack and Front Row does have its own set
of problems (i.e. by starting iTunes in the background) which require
Remote Buddy to handle it with special care to be reliable, direct
support for DVD Assist is unlikely, though.

Best regards,
Felix
