This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Hi Felix, I installed RB preview 7 the other day, and also updated to iTunes 7 and Front Row 1.3. Over the last few days, I have noticed that Remote Buddy is no longer running in the morning. My Mac Mini stays on all night, there are no reboots (although RB IS in the startup at login list). Whether this helps at all, or not, When I restart Remote Buddy, I notice that the remote is not active (i.e. red light in the RB menu), and when I go to the remotes option in Preferences, the Apple Remote is not ticked. Does this provide any clues? The only other thing I can think of is that maybe it's dropping out when the machine goes to sleep? Sorry I can't provide much more than this, although I will keep an eye open for other clues. All the best Nick | These entries from the FAQ may be relevant to this topic: Hardware - Apple® Remote
To enable you to use all capabilities of the IR Receiver of your Mac®, Remote Buddy is using its own driver. In contrast, all other applications with integrated Apple® Remote support usually use the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem.
As long as you're running Remote Buddy, Remote Buddy and its driver are responsible for turning the received button presses into actions. As soon as you quit Remote Buddy, this task is again handled by the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem.
If other applications don't use the interface to the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem correctly, this can lead to the effect that nothing happens when you press a button on your Apple® Remote. For as long as you're running Remote Buddy, issues like this are covered by Remote Buddy and it's driver and are therefore not visible to you. However, as soon as you quit Remote Buddy, the OS X Apple® Remote subsystem is back in control and any issues caused in it by other applications become visible.
Therefore Remote Buddy is neither the cause of the issue nor is it responsible for it. Instead, the cause of the issue exists independently of Remote Buddy. It's located elsewhere and can also only be solved there.
Although our products can't cause any such issues, we're regularly contacted about such issues and asked for help. In order to make locating and fixing the cause of such issues as easy and efficient as possible, we've developed a free diagnostics tool: Remote Control Diagnostics. It can locate issues with a single click and will provide you with information about the issue as well as with instructions on how you can fix it.
Please update your copy of Remote Buddy to version 1.15 or later.
Hardware - Wii™ Remote In order to automatically activate the Bluetooth® Receiver on startup, enter the settings, choose "Hardware", then click on "Bluetooth® Receiver". Finally activate the checkbox "Search for supported remotes on startup". Remote Buddy will then automatically look for remote control paired through the "Setup Wizard" on next startup.

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Hello Nick, thanks for sharing. If Remote Buddy should have crashed, there should be a file called "Remote Buddy.crash.log" in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/ If this file exists on your computer, could you please send it to info@iospirit.com? Whether this helps at all, or not, When I restart Remote Buddy, I notice that the remote is not active (i.e. red light in the RB menu), and when I go to the remotes option in Preferences, the Apple Remote is not ticked. Does this provide any clues? The only other thing I can think of is that maybe it's dropping out when the machine goes to sleep? Is EyeTV or another program which also has direct support for the remote control active and in front at that time by any chance? You should only see a red light, if some other applications has captured the remote at that time. Best regards, Felix

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Hi Felix, When I got up this morning, Remote Buddy had quit on me again. There were NO log file in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter. Conscious of what this problem, when I went to bed last night, I checked to ensure that everything had quit. All that was running was iChat. EyeTV had been quit, FrontRow was not running and DVD Player was closed, I know this doesn't help much, I'll run a test a bit later to see if it happens when the computer goes to sleep/wakes up. I wonder if it's related to the upgrade to FrontRow 1.3 ? All the best Nick

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Hi Felix, I have a crash report. Will send it via email. I can reproduce one sort of application quiting. For my system it is enough to change the screen resolution while RB is running. Standard for me 848x480 (Plasma) -> switch to 1024x768. -> RB has quit quietly. One more thing: If I use two desktops on the two displays, could you add an option to tell RB which display to use for popping up? By, Andreas

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Hi Andreas, thanks a lot for the logfile. The source of the problem was easy to find and I've just compiled and uploaded Preview 7b which fixes this bug. Multiscreen support was already planned for Preview 7 - however, time was to short. So you can expect to see it in Remote Buddy in the future. Best regards, Felix

This posting is older than 6 months and can contain outdated information. Hello Nick, I've just updated Remote Buddy to version 1.0 Preview 7b. There is no condition - other than when installing new Cocoa behaviours or changing a preference setting - where Remote Buddy would quit itself (but even in those cases, it would automatically relaunch). So if no logfile exists in that directory, that really leaves me with no idea of what could happen on your Mac. However, it's not unlikely Remote Buddy crashed on your Mac for the same reasons that it did on Andreas'. Please download and install the latest version and let me know, if the problem persists. All the best, Felix
